John J. Pitney Jr. a professor of American politics at Claremont McKenna College has an interesting article on President Obama's search for enemies to rally the base of the Democratic party and how it hasn't worked. He writes:
Just three weeks before Election Day, Democrats are still searching for demons.
Why? Richard Nixon once explained: “Politics is battle, and the best way to fire up your troops is to rally them against a visible opponent on the other side of the field. If a loyal supporter will fight hard for you, he will fight twice as hard against your enemies.”
Let's review the "targets" of Obama's attacks:
Radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh, Chief Justice Roberts, House GOP Leader John Boehner, and now "that sinister outside groups are influencing elections with tainted money, including foreign donations" which even the New York Times can't find.
