43,500 Duck Fans at Spring Game !!!!

Just got back from Eugene and yes there were 43,500 Oregon Duck fans at the Spring game today. Most in the Pac-10 or Pac-12. We had 25,000 last year. I can remember not too long ago when we couldn't get that many people to a real game. I guess that is what happens when you go to the National Championship game. Nice ceremony before the game, at half time and at the end of the game to celebrate and thank the members of our armed forces.

I guess today's game will have to sustain my addiction to Oregon football till the start of fall practice in August. Go Ducks!

(click on title for link to news story on game)

BTW Washington had 10,000 today at their Spring game and Oregon State had 5,519. Where are the Beaver Believers ?

Oregon's Spring Football Game !

Saturday, a friend and I, will drive the three hour trip up I-5 from Medford to Eugene to watch the Oregon Duck's Spring football game. This is basically an inter squad game that ends spring football practice. My wife thinks I am craze to drive 3 hours up and 3 hours back to see an inter squad game. I pointed out to her that 95,000 fans show up in Columbus, Ohio for Ohio State's Spring games. There should be at least 30,000 thousand Duck fans at this game. While in Eugene we will check out the Duck Store to see if there is anything I don't already have. May go to Track Town Pizza for lunch and maybe get a hot dog or two at the game and see how the team is doing. At a Spring game you can concentrate on watching the various positions such as QB or running back and not worry about who is winning or the score. A football game in April.... it will have to last me through the hot days of Summer. The weatherman say it will be a nice day in Eugene. What a great way to spend a Saturday! Go Ducks!

The Charter Bundle

In the last year I have been unhappy with my Quest Internet at home because it didn't give me enough Internet speed to watch streaming of Netflix movies through my Play Station 3. When I was finally able to figure out how to program the Play Station 3 to pick up the wireless signal from my desk top modem I was only able to get streaming movies from Netflix that would stop and start which is very annoying if you are watching a movie. I checked with Quest to see if I could upgrade to get more speed but was told their lines to my home would not support it. Thus, I started looking at getting Internet through my Charter cable provider. I did have my doubts about Charter. For the last 25 years plus we have only had "Expanded Basic" from Charter Cable and the picture on some of our channels were far from perfect and in the case of our local CBS station it was downright terrible. In the past, I had the repair folks out from Charter and they were unable to fix the problem. In spite of that I discovered with the "Charter Bundle" I could get high speed Internet, High Definition Cable TV and Telephone service(local and unlimited long distance) for less than I was paying separately for these services. I had Charter for Cable, Quest for Internet and local phone and Integra for long distance telephone. Charter even threw in HBO and Cinemax for the same price all guaranteed for two years !

Charter came out Saturday to install the High Definition Box and the new Internet connection. The phone service will be installed later. Things did not start out well. First, electricity in much of Medford went out just before the cable guy arrived. It went back on just as the cable guy was to leave. Second, the cable guy said we needed a lap top computer to install the wireless Internet. We don't have a lap top computer and no one told us we needed one. I told him the reason we needed wireless is for the Play Station 3 and streaming Netflix movies. He said he couldn't have anything to do with the PS3 and he needed a lap top computer The cable guy said if he could not install the wireless Internet then he couldn't install the High Definition Cable TV and we would have to re set our installation appointment!To say the least I got a little hot under the collar. I called my friend Bob to see if he was able to come over with his lap top and I got his answering machine and I left a message with my predicament. Just as the cable guy was to leave again, having installed nothing, Bob called back and then came over with his lap top computer. The cable guy then said he couldn't find the HDMI outlet on my TV and would not be able to install the High Definition TV Box without it. I crawled behind the TV and found the HdMI cable from the Play Station 3 plugged into the outlet on the TV. I unplugged it and showed it to the cable guy so he could install the High Definition TV Box. ( I bought a HDMI switch the next day so I could install the HDMI cords from both the cable box and the PS3 in the same slot)
A second cable guy arrived on the scene to help the first cable guy and he noticed our box on the side of the house needed updating so he installed a new box and a CABLE BOOSTER and guess what ?...... our local CBS station came in very clear and in fact all of our expended basic channels come in much clearer. I love that guy !!!!

After the cable guys left I was able to reprogram my PS3 to pick up the NEW wireless Internet from Charter and was able to stream movies from Netflix that came in with a prefect picture and no stops and starts ! We have a great signal from the Internet with great speed. Lots of high definition TV channels. We now have a number of HBO and Cinemax channels and many "On Demand Channels." All of our channels come in great and as they say "all's well that ends well" I can't wait for football season so I can watch all of those games on ESPN in High Definition !

2012 Republican Presidential Nomination UPDATE

An update ..... Haley Barbour (Pictured above and # 7 on my list below) dropped out of the race today. As I said in my earlier post, set forth below, he had "no chance." I think he saw the writing on the wall !

1.Tim Pawlenty Yes, the former Governor of Minnesota has impressed me in the last couple of weeks. He has a blue collar background and is Conservative and has the ability to come across as a nice guy. He has no major liability's and can unite the various factions of the Republican party. His drawback of lack of name familiarity will change as the campaign goes on.

2. Mitch Daniels The current Governor of Indiana. Daniels is a budget hawk and is very qualified to be President.If there was ever a time for a budget hawk it is now. He has done a great job in Indiana and is very plain spoken. His drawbacks are he may not want it enough and his wife may not want the spotlight of a Presidential campaign. Daniels could very well be my first choice if he runs.

3. Mitt Romney I like Mitt Romney a lot. He looks Presidential and has great executive experience in helping troubled business and America is in trouble. I don't care if he is a Mormon (LDS) but a lot of people do and the Massachusetts health care law is an albatross around his neck. He is more liberal than I am and large sections of the Republican base may not accept him.

4.Mike Huckabee I like his ability to disagree but not be disagreeable. I have watched many of his shows on Fox News and he is a very likable guy. He is more conservative on social issues than I and less conservative on economic issues. While social conservatives like him the National Review conservatives can't stand him. There is also some concern that he doesn't have the "fire in the belly" that he had in 2008.

5. Sara Palin I love Sara but she can't win. I am bothered she quite as Governor of Alaska before her term was up and she is a "turn off" to independents who we need to win. I am also bothered that she is more interested in publicity then governing.The high pitch of her voice sends a shiver down my back. Margaret Thatcher had Lawrence Olivier work on her voice to lower it. Yes, Olivier was a Conservative party member.

6. Newt Gingrich The former Speaker of the House is very bright and very undisciplined. He has 100 ideas an hour and 5 of them are good. He is not trusted by the party and has personal baggage. We already have a professor as President and it has not worked out. In spite of all of the above I like Newt and in a crises he could be our Winston Churchill. Has no chance.

7. Haley Barbour Former lobbyist with a southern drawl. No chance. UPDATE : Gone !

8. Michele Bachman Congresswoman from Minnesota needs more seasoning.

The YAF " Sharon Statment" from 1960

From Wikipedia:

The Sharon Statement is the founding statement of principles of the Young Americans for Freedom.

Written by M. Stanton Evans with the assistance of Annette Kirk, wife of Russell Kirk,[1] and adopted on September 11, 1960, the statement is named for the location of the inaugural meeting of Young Americans for Freedom, held at William F. Buckley, Jr.'s estate in Sharon, Connecticut. The statement reads:

“ WE, as young conservatives believe:
"THAT foremost among the transcendent values is the individual's use of his God-given free will, whence derives his right to be free from the restrictions of arbitrary force;

"THAT liberty is indivisible, and that political freedom cannot long exist without economic freedom;

"THAT the purpose of government is to protect those freedoms through the preservation of internal order, the provision of national defense, and the administration of justice;

"THAT when government ventures beyond these rightful functions, it accumulates power, which tends to diminish order and liberty;

"THAT the Constitution of the United States is the best arrangement yet devised for empowering government to fulfill its proper role, while restraining it from the concentration and abuse of power;

"THAT the genius of the Constitution - the division of powers - is summed up in the clause that reserves primacy to the several states, or to the people in those spheres not specifically delegated to the Federal government;

"THAT the market economy, allocating resources by the free play of supply and demand, is the single economic system compatible with the requirements of personal freedom and constitutional government, and that it is at the same time the most productive supplier of human needs;

"THAT when government interferes with the work of the market economy, it tends to reduce the moral and physical strength of the nation, that when it takes from one to bestow on another, it diminishes the incentive of the first, the integrity of the second, and the moral autonomy of both;

"THAT we will be free only so long as the national sovereignty of the United States is secure; that history shows periods of freedom are rare, and can exist only when free citizens concertedly defend their rights against all enemies…

"THAT the forces of international Communism are, at present, the greatest single threat to these liberties;

"THAT the United States should stress victory over, rather than coexistence with this menace; and

"THAT American foreign policy must be judged by this criterion: does it serve the just interests of the United States?"

Sounded good in the early 60's when I was a young and a Member of Young Americans for freedom and sounds good today.

William Rusher RIP

Conservative icon Bill Rusher died today at age 87. For many years he was the Publisher of National Review Magazine. He served as it's publisher from 1957, when he was hired by Bill Buckley, to 1988. A veteran spokesman for the conservative viewpoint on public issues. He became a familiar television and radio personality. His TV show on PBS, "The Advocates", was a mock "trial" of various issues of the day. Rusher was the Advocate for the Conservative point of view and a little known former governor, Mike Dukakis, took the Liberal side. A newspaper columnist A professional lecturer and prolific author, with five hardcover books and numerous magazine articles. His 1975 book, The Making of the New Majority Party, sold over a quarter of a million copies in hardcover and paperback, and his 1984 book, The Rise of the Right appeared in expanded form in a trade paperback edition.

Rusher was an influential political activist, and was one of the three men who in 1961 launched the draft of Barry Goldwater for the 1964 Republican nomination—a drive that captured and transformed the Republican Party, and continued under Ronald Reagan. He graduated from Princeton University and Harvard Law School, served in the Air Force in India in World War II, and was an associate for seven years at a large Wall Street law firm. In 1956 and 1957 he was associate counsel to the U.S. Senate's Internal Security Subcommittee before joining National.

Rusher was an early mentor for Young Americans for Freedom and attended it's formation at William F. Buckley's family estate where the Sharon Statement was drafted and issued.

After leaving National Review, in 1989, Rusher became a Distinguished Fellow of the Claremont Institute, for which he advised and wrote from his home in San Francisco. Rusher was also a member of the Board of Advisors of the Ashbrook Center for Public Affairs, a member of the board of directors of National Review Inc., and chairman of the board of advisors of the Media Research Center.

On a personal note I spent a day with Bill Rusher in the early 1970's when he came to the University of Oregon for a speech. I was a law student at the time and saw an announcement, by the University Speakers Bureau, seeking a student volunteer to usher him around campus and get him to his speech. I volunteered and got the job. I picked him up at the Eugene airport and drove him to his motel room near campus. I then took him to a campus radio station interview and then to his speech. I introduced him at the speech and then with a couple of other conservative students took him to dinner at the Black Angus restaurant on Franklin Blvd. He then invited us to his motel room to watch an episode of "The Advocates" being broadcast on the local PBS station.

In introducing him I read the following quote from Bill Buckley's book "Cruising Speed - A Documentary" (1971), where Buckley describes a typical editorial conference at National Review:

"Bill Rusher always speaks first, because as publisher he goes back to other business after making his recommendations. He is the showman--who, as he ticks off his list, writes the appropriate commentary on each item with the tone of his voice, and takes special pleasure from reading aloud choice news items or speeches or releases from his most particular enemies, liberal Republicans. His timing is so good that his final sentence usually ends as he reaches to door of the conference room, which he opens with a flourish, his departure the signal of monotony to begin."

Forty years later my personal library still has the book with the above quote underlined.

Long befor Rush, Sean Hannity, Bill Kristol and Charles Krauthammer there was Bill Buckley and Bill Rusher. We Conservatives owe a lot to them ! I hope there is a Heaven because it will be a more interesting place with Bill Buckley , Bill Rusher and Ronald Reagan.

26 Miles !!!!

He ran 26 Miles !

“Send in the Clowns.”

"Don't worry their here"

Charlie Cook of The Cook Report has an interesting column today where he writes in The Natioanl Journal:

Some bright, talented, and highly qualified Republicans are thinking about running for president. Haley Barbour of Mississippi, Mitch Daniels of Indiana, Mike Huckabee of Arkansas, Tim Pawlenty of Minnesota, and Mitt Romney of Massachusetts—all current or former governors—are eminently capable. Regardless of whether you like or agree with them, they are worthy of consideration for the Republican nomination.

How demoralizing it must be, then, for them to look at national polling that shows Donald Trump tied for first place for the GOP nomination.....

But what does it say about the Republican Party or, for that matter, the American people that this guy gets a second glance? Could a Jersey Shore personality be far behind?

I have been watching as Donald Trump makes the rounds of TV and Radio shows trying to pump up his candidacy. He is very clever and does a good job of pandering to the Conservative wing of the Republican party of which I am a member. However, I don't' trust the man and in the end I don't believe the American people will either. He is already talking about running as an independent. Is he a straw man for Obama ? No, he is a person who is interested in Donald Trump ! You don't run for the Republican Presidential Nomination and say if you lose you will run as an Independent.

As much as I like Teddy Roosevelt I have always believed he made a big mistake in his Bull Moose candidacy in 1912.

When he was asked last night on how he would solve our debt problem Trump said he would make better deals with the Chinese and the Japanese without the necessity of drastic budget cuts in Medicare or other social programs or increasing taxes. That's an easy answerer but totally disingenuous and demagogic. I am all for better deals with China but that will not solve our economic problems which are of our own making.

Demagogues through history have gained power by blaming their country's problems on outsiders. Trump has been blaming the Saudis, the Chinese and the Japanese for Americas economic problems. I believe we should be firmer with all of these countries but to blame all of our problems on them will delude us from making the change that is necessary at home.

"Obama Sinks to the Occasion" by Fred Barnes

President Obama always lets you down. Just when you think he’s ready to deliver a lofty speech chocked with specifics on handling the spending and debt emergency, he offers up a hyper-partisan attack on the leading Republican proposal, gives practically no details of his own plan, and then sanctimoniously puts himself on the side of preserving “the American dream for future generations.”......

Let me list the lowlights of the president’s speech this afternoon at George Washington University:
To read the rest click on the title for a link.

Hint:

1. It's George Bush's fault !,

2. It was "Class Warfare" and,

3. It was very vague.

4. It put Vice President Biden to sleep ! Fred Barnes didn't say that but the video that has gone viral on the Internet shows it !

Mike Huckabee came to Biden's defense and said: "He was praying that nobody will find out just how disingenuous they are about actually cutting the expenses and hoping and praying that the American people don’t catch on to the games that they’re trying to hoist upon us,”

Update:

Clive Crook is a senior editor of The Atlantic, a columnist for National Journal, and a commentator for the Financial Times writes this about the speech:

.....My instant unguarded reaction, in fact, was to find it not just weak but pitiful. I honestly wondered why he bothered.......

Far from seeking compromise on tax policy, the whole speech was yet again organised around an attack on the evil Bush tax cuts, and a promise to reverse them in part. We would not be in this mess, he said, but for the Bush tax cuts and the Medicare prescription drug benefit. I wondered, as he said that, is he therefore going to call for the drug benefit to be halted and all the Bush tax cuts to be reversed? Stupid question. Of course not. Just the tax cuts for the rich, leaving the much larger part of the Bush tax policy in place. Even now, he is deploring the Bush tax cuts as the cause of all the country's problems while actually proposing to leave most of them alone......

The speech was more notable for its militant--though ineffectual--hostility to Republican proposals than for any fresh thinking of its own. It was a waste of breath

Now Charles Krauthamer has his say:

"I rarely heard a speech by a president so shallow, so hyper-partisan and so intellectually dishonest, ...

Teddy Roosevelt & Football the Sport I Love !

New book by National Review contributor about football and Teddy Roosevelt and his love for the game. Click on title for a link.

150 Years Ago Today

The American Civil War started! America's trial by fire !

Jim Lacy of National Review Online:

At 4:30 a.m. on April 12, 1861, Confederate artillery batteries surrounding Fort Sumter opened fire. It was the beginning of a war that consumed the nation for the next four years, left more than 620,000 dead, hundreds of thousands permanently maimed, and half the country lying in ruins. On this, the 150th anniversary of the start of the most calamitous war in American history, it is worth looking back on our attempt at national suicide and observing how far we have come since.

"We in America have created suicidal government"

Robert Samuelson an economics columnist for the Washington Post hits the nail on the head today with his column about the growth of government and politicians who promise what they can't deliver:

We in America have created suicidal government; the threatened federal shutdown and stubborn budget deficits are but symptoms. By suicidal, I mean that government has promised more than it can realistically deliver and, as a result, repeatedly disappoints by providing less than people expect or jeopardizing what they already have. But government can't easily correct its excesses, because Americans depend on it for so much that any effort to change the status arouses a firestorm of opposition that virtually ensures defeat. Government's very expansion has brought it into disrepute, paralyzed politics and impeded it from acting in the national interest.

Obama wants to shutdown the government for political advantage!

A statement from Speaker of the House John Boehner:

“I have just been informed that the White House has issued a veto threat on a bill that would keep the government from shutting down, without stating a single policy justification for President Obama’s threatened veto. Neither the President nor Senate Democrats have identified a single policy provision they find objectionable in the bill. The bill the House is considering today would fund our troops through September in the face of three conflicts and keep the government from shutting down tomorrow, while reflecting meaningful reductions in government spending that are widely accepted by both chambers of Congress. As I have said before, Republicans’ goal is to cut spending to help create a better environment for job creation – not to shut down the government.

“We will send this bill to the Senate today, confident that those Democrats who believe it is important to fund our troops and make real spending cuts will prevail upon Senator Reid and our Commander-in-Chief to keep the government from shutting down. The President and Democratic leaders have all committed to working with Republicans to cut spending. A bill that falls short of that commitment cannot pass the House."
Yes, Obama wants to shutdown the government for political advantage

UPDATE:

GOP-controlled House passes one-week spending bill that Senate Democrats oppose and Obama has vowed to veto. Eric Cantor: We Will Not Leave Town Until We Cut Spending & Get Our Fiscal House In Order. Tells House members to not make other plans this weekend.

2012 Republican Presidential Nomination

I love politics and the 2012 Presidential race is already upon us. Barak Obama will get the nomination of the Democrats but who will get the Republican Nomination? The following is my list in order of preference but not a prediction of who will get the nomination. I will be updating my list and and may reshuffle the list as the campaign goes on . I reserve the right to change my mind. Regardless of my preference below I will support the nominee of my party.

1. Tim Pawlenty Yes, the former Governor of Minnesota has impressed me in the last couple of weeks. He has a blue collar background and is Conservative and has the ability to come across as a nice guy. He has no major liability's and can unite the various factions of the Republican party. His drawback of lack of name familiarity will change as the campaign goes on.

MOVIE: "April Morning" (1988)

On Saturday I watched a movie I have wanted to see for a long time called "April Morning" about Lexington and Concord and the American Revolution from the perspective a 15 year old boy who stands with his father and other "Minute Men" at Lexington Green and witness "the shot heard around the world." The "Hallmark Hall of Fame" movie from 1988 is one of a handful of movies about the American Revolution. Unlike a similar movie made by Walt Disney called "Johnny Tremain" this movie is more realistic in the sense of "The Red Badge of Courage." You feel the terror of standing there with fellow farmers with old hunting rifles as they hear the drums of "the best army in the world" long before it marches into view. As the British Army marches into view in their fancy red uniforms in perfect formation you can feel the farmers and small town men ask themselves .....why am I here? When told to "disperse" they want to run but hold firm. When the British office orders his men to "FIX BAYONETS" the Minute Men know what they have gotten themselves into. You know the rest.

The movie is based upon a Howard Fast historical novel. One of the reason I really wanted to see the movie, other than it's subject, is that it was one of the last movies Director John Ford wanted to make before he became ill and died. He wanted John Wayne to play the father of the 15 year old. The father stands in the first rank of the Minute Men and his son in the second. Ford viewed making the movie as an early gift for the American Bicentennial. Wayne also wanted to make the movie but also died before he was able. A few years after both were dead the movie was made as a Hallmark Hall of Fame made for TV movie. For a TV movie it has good production values and the music is especially good. I found the movie on Netflix. It was only available for "streaming" and not for rental through the mail.

The cast includes :Chad Lowe,(15 year old "Minute Man") Tommy Lee Jones,(His father) Robert Urich,(Fathers friend)Susan Blakely,(Mother) Rip Torn,(Yankee Agitator)

BTW one of the first things the British tell the Minute Men is to drop their arms. There is a reason we have the 2nd Amendment to the U.S. the Constitution.

DUCKS WIN CBI TOURNAMENT !!!!!!!!

With about 25 seconds left the game was tied. Creighton had the ball and spread the offence and a Creighton player went across the "famous" center line for an "over and back" to turn the ball over to the Ducks. E J Singler (Of South Medford High) drove from the corner to the basket to score two points in the last second of the game. The crowd in the last 5 minutes of the game went just crazy. It sounded like the "The Pitt" (Mac Court)of old ! What a way to end the season in the NEW Matt Court with the hard to see center line :) Senior Oregon player Joevan Catron was a warrior all season long and was again tonight! Go Ducks

Movie: "APRIL LOVE" (1957)

This is a re write of a posting I have posted for several year in April. The Movie "April Love" came out in 1957 and I can still remember watching Pat Boone walk down a country lane singing a song near the beginning of the movie. As a young kid, growing up in the 1950's in a small town in Southern Oregon, I though Boone looked so sophisticated,( ha). I saw it at a Saturday matinee . In those days grade school children could go to movies themselves in small towns like Roseburg, Oregon. Every April I think of that movie and song. The Lyrics are as follows:

"April love is for the very young. Every star's a wishing star that shines for you April love is all the seven wonders One little kiss can tell you this is true Sometimes an April day will suddenly bring showers Rain to grow the flowers for her first bouquet But April love can slip right through your fingers So if she's the one don't let her run away[Instrumental Interlude] Sometimes an April day will suddenly bring showers Rain to grow the flowers for her first bouquet But April love can slip right through your fingers So if she's the one don't let her run away"

Pat Boone plays a JD (juvenile delinquent) who is sent to live with his relatives who own a farm in the country. He meets Shirley Jones and there is car racing and lots of singing . It is a sweet movie in glorious color. Everyone in the movie is nice and it's is a happy movie like a walk in a park on a sunny day. I wish they would put it out on DVD. It's not great cinema but it left an impression on me. Things were a lot simpler then.
