Rudy Giuliani is in a way, the child who yelled, "the king has no clothes"

In November of 2008 upon his election as President of the United States I wrote on this blog the following:

The victory speech of President-Elect Obama was also very well done and gracious and time will tell whether he will truly try to lead as a moderate and reach out to all Americans. As anyone who has read this blog for any time will know I have been a vigorous critic of Barack Obama.

Martin Luther King had a dream that one day all Americans would not be
"judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character."

That is how I judged Barack Obama by his character that I found wanting!

For the sake of the country I love, I hope I have been wrong about him and I intend to give him the benefit of the doubt unless events prove otherwise.

Congratulations to President-Elect Barack Obama

Well, after 6 years of the Obama Presidency I have reluctantly reached the same conclusion as Rudy Giuliani, President Obama does not love America and has acted in  ways to hurt the nation I love. This is not easy to write or say!
It is possible to disagree with people politically and still view them as wishing  the best for the United States. I give Giuliani credit for being the first major public figure to voice what many of us have felt for some time.  It takes courage to face the wrath of the liberal elites in the media and academia in this country who have been propping up this fraud!

Ferguson, Missouri  was just one example where Obama poured gasoline on race relations in this country.  He could have been a calming influence but instead he played to the mob and made a bad situation worse.  Time and time again he has divided black from white for short term political purposes. A man who loves America would not have done this.

Time and time again he has apologized to the world for the alleged faults of his own country. He has brought up slavery and "Jim Crow" more than once but neglects to point out that thousands of Americans died at places like Gettysburg and Antietam to end this blemish on our honor.

On foreign soil he has called America "arrogant" when it was the United States who has been the bulwark of the free world since the end of World War II and has given its treasure and the blood of its sons in the defense of liberty around the world.

He has encouraged and abetted thousands of foreigners to cross our borders illegally. Debating and passing new emigration laws are one thing but to disregard the law to allow illegal immigration is another.

He has at the least been passive at best when the IRS has illegally intimidated and harassed honest American citizens exercising  their constitutional rights.

Jonah Goldberg of National Review discuses the issue in the following excerpt:

More from Jonah Goldberg:

More than any other president, Obama was raised with a detachedly critical view of America. He grew up abroad and in Hawaii, which is as close as you can get to growing-up abroad and still be in the United States. (Sorry, I love Hawaii, but it’s true.) At school he hung out mostly with the foreign-exchange students from Pakistan. “For years when Barack was around them, he seemed to share their attitudes as sophisticated outsiders who looked at politics from an international perspective,” David Maraniss writes in his biography of Obama. “He was one of them, in that sense.”

Byron York writes in his piece on the Maraniss book:

But Obama was ambitious. Appalled by the “dirty deeds” of “Reagan and his minions” (as he wrote in “Dreams from My Father”), Obama became increasingly interested in, as Maraniss writes, “gaining power in order to change things.” He couldn't do that as an international guy hanging around with his Pakistani friends; he needed to become an American.

So he did. One of those Pakistani friends, Beenu Mahmood, saw a major change in Obama. Mahmood calls Obama “the most deliberate person I ever met in terms of constructing his own identity,” according to Maraniss. The time after college, Mahmood says, “was an important period for him, first the shift from not international but American, number one, and then not white, but black.”

Mahmood, Maraniss writes, “could see Obama slowly but carefully distancing himself as a necessary step in establishing his political identity as an American.”

His early political years involved similar strategic positioning, from joining Jeremiah Wright’s Church to (according to David Axelrod) lying about his opposition to gay marriage. And it paid off. And when he finally burst on the national scene, he could use his detachment to his advantage. Indeed, his whole approach to politics has been, “People of Earth, stop your bickering. I’m Barack Obama and I’m here to help.” The slogan “we are the ones we’ve been waiting for” implies the building-up of a seething desire to make this country different than it is and throw off the dead weight of the past. Whenever he talks unapologetically about patriotism, it is invariably in the context of trying to get the country to rally around some new government endeavor (and, more importantly, himself).

I disliked and disagreed with  JFK, LBJ, Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton but never questioned their love of the USA, but I do for Barak Obama!

Wish I could be there for the Ceremony old buddy!

Jerry Norton, 67, longtime journalist, National Press Club member, and Vietnam war veteran, will be buried in Arlington National Cemetery on April 11.
His family invites friends and colleagues to join them at Arlington at 9:30 a.m. for a 10 a.m. service, followed by a reception in his memory in downtown D.C.
Norton was a Commodity News Services/Unicom News reporter in Washington before becoming regional editor in Hong Kong and executive editor in London. He spent 25 years in Reuters as a senior correspondent or veteran editor in Hong Kong and Tokyo; was bureau chief in Singapore; bureau chief in Indonesia; and lastly, editor in Washington.
He joined CNS and the NPC in 1974, soon after gaining his Masters in Journalism from Columbia University. Before that, he served in the Army in Vietnam, after having graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Oregon. He left Vietnam with shrapnel in his body and with a purple heart and other decorations.
Between his UNICOM years and his 25-year career at Reuters, Norton served as business editor of the South China Morning Post. He was twice based in Singapore and twice president of Singapore’s Foreign Correspondents Association, besides being a member of the FCC in Hong Kong and the FCCJ and Overseas Press Club in Japan.
Norton worked for Phillips Publishing in Washington at one point early in his career.
After retiring in 2011 from Reuters in D.C., he worked as executive director of the Young America’s Foundation National Journalism Center until he became ill. He had served on the Young Americans for Freedom national board while at the U of Oregon and was active in YAF after his Vietnam service until his journalism career began.
He died Dec. 15, 2013, after a 14-month battle with a brain tumor. Norton is survived by his wife, Kim, and son, Michael.

Next time I  am in Washington I will stop by to say goodbye in person.  Not bad for a "kid" from Coos Bay, Oregon.

Picture of Jerry when he was an undergrad at the University of Oregon featured in a Eugene Register Guard newspaper story dated Sunday, Feb 25, 1968. Jerry is quoted as saying: on politics" the majority of YAF members support Gov. Reagan for the 1968 Republican nomination"  Jerry was ahead of his time.  Reagan wouldn't get the nomination for 12 more years until 1980!

Great Ted Cruz Video

Not your timid politician! This man is a LEADER! He may be too "hot" for the general public but if this country continues on it's downward spiral the times may be so desperate the nation will look to Ted Cruz!

Republican War Against Tea Party

This is a great segment on Sunday with Pat Caddell on Fox News that the reason the Republican leadership in Congress has not pushed for high level investigation of the IRS for targeting the Tea Party is because they want the IRS to go after the Tea Party.

These are the same establishment types that led us to  defeat with George H.W. Bush for a 2nd term and the defeats of Gerald Ford, Bob Dole, John McCain and Mitt Romney. Good men all, but not good candidates. I  fought them in 1964 when they tried to defeat  Goldwater( both in the nomination process and the general election) and 1976 and 1980 when they tried to defeat Reagan. I abandoned the cause in 1968 for Nixon which  I deeply regret.

I will support the nominee of the Republican Party but it's time to take on the establishment Republican party one more time.

I support Senator Ted Cruz because he wants to take the fight to the Democrats.

WHY THEY FIGHT by By Brit Hume

Senator Cruz and his adherents do not view things in conventional terms. They look back over the past half-century, including the supposedly golden era of Ronald Reagan, and see the uninterrupted forward march of the American left. Entitlement spending never stopped growing. The regulatory state continued to expand. The national debt grew and grew and finally in the Obama years, exploded. They see an American population becoming unrecognizable from the free and self-reliant people they thought they knew. And they see the Republican Party as having utterly failed to stop the drift toward an unfree nation supervised by an overweening and bloated
bureaucracy. They are not interested in Republican policies that merely slow the growth of this leviathan. They want to stop it and reverse it. And they want to show their supporters they'll try anything to bring that about."

Mr. President: "NO" Confidence!

The British have a vote of "No Confidence" when the members of English Parliament  have lost faith in the Prime Minister and his government and want to force a new election.  The United States Constitution has no similar procedure,  but I believe members of Congress should vote NO on President Obama's request for military action against Syria.   Regardless of the merits of an attack on the evil regime in Syria and their use of chemical weapons on their own people, the U.S. Congress should vote NO because it has no confidence in President Obama's leadership in any such  attack.

He has shown himself to lack courage, decisiveness and judgment. Short of a direct attack on the United States no American soldiers, sailors or marines should be placed in harms way under his leadership. Why place American Armed Forces at risk when he will not back them up?

It could be argued that a failure to act on Syria will embolden the Iranian's in their development of nuclear weapons. However, they and we have already determined he will do nothing and  Israel is on it's own.  President Obama will be our President for three years and four months so American's better be hunkered down because, with or without, an attack on Syria, it will be a dangerous time because the bulwark of democracy has a weak, indecisive, self centered leader who lacks courage. I believe in our Constitution and he was constitutionally elected and America will have to live with it's democratic decision and hopefully learn from it's mistake.

He is a sorry excuse for a President  of the United States of America!

John Wayne: "American Icons TV Guide Speical Edition"

Great Special Edition full size magazine.  Saw it tonight at Fred Meyer in Medford and bought it.  I have seen a lot of "Special Editions" for John Wayne over the years and this one is particularly nice.  It has color posters of 170 of John Wayne's movies broken down by decade from the 1920's through the 1970's. Lots of family pictures I have never seen and I have seen a lot of photo books on The Duke in my large collection of John Wayne memorabilia. I still miss him!

Happy 4th of July, 2013

Posterity! You will never know how much it cost the present Generation to preserve your Freedom! I hope you will make good use of it. If you do not, I shall repent in Heaven, that I ever took half the Pains to preserve it."

— John Adams

John Adams on celebrating Independence Day:

The Second Day of July 1776, will be the most memorable Epocha, in the History of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated, by succeeding Generations, as the great anniversary Festival. It ought to be commemorated, as the Day of Deliverance by solemn Acts of Devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with Pomp and Parade, with Shews, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations (fireworks) from one End of this Continent to the other from this Time forward forever more.

Well John it's 237 years later and we are still celebrating.

“The 4th of July is the first great fact in your nation’s history — the very ringbolt in the chain of your yet undeveloped destiny,” he declared. “Cling to this day — cling to it, and to its principles, with the grasp of a storm-tossed mariner to a spar at midnight.”

Fredrick Douglass

America Why I Love Her

There is a news story in today's Medford Mail Tribune about a citizenship ceremony that was held up at Oregon's Crater Lake National Park and the reporter interviewed several of the new United States citizens on why they became Americans.  The final interview in the story :

Dallas resident Derek Lee, 59, came from the United Kingdom to settle in northern Oregon a little more than two decades ago. He is employed at Walmart.
It was an American actor who drew the newly minted American to the States.
"John Wayne — he was my hero," Lee said. "I based my life on John Wayne. I was very quiet when I was young, and some bullies tried to bully me. I stood up for myself.
"I am here all because of The Duke," he added. "He was a man among men."

Mr. Lee, Welcome to America this July 4th!

Stand for Freedom!

Peggy Noonan:

The purpose of the surveillance is enhanced security, a necessary goal to say the least. The price is a now formal and agreed-upon acceptance of the end of the last vestiges of Americans' sense of individual distance and privacy from the government. The price too is a knowledge, based on human experience and held by all but fools and children, that the gleanings of the surveillance state will eventually be used by the mischievous, the malicious and the ignorant in ways the creators of the system did not intend. For all we know that's already happened. But of course we don't know: It's secret. Only the intelligence officials know, and they say everything's A-OK. .......

It is a great irony, and history will marvel at it, that the president most committed to expanding the centrality, power, prerogatives and controls of the federal government is also the president who, through lack of care, arrogance, and an absence of any sense of prudential political boundaries, has done the most in our time to damage trust in government.

al-Queda Terrorist attack or Real Bad Movie Review

On the anniversary of September 11 al-Queda terrorist attacked a United States Consulate in Benghazi Libya and murdered the United States Ambassador to Libya and killed three other Americans in a brutal killings that is shown below.

DO NOT READ FURTHER If YOU DO NOT WANT TO SEE A GRAPHIC PHOTO THAT WAS ON THE FRONT PAGE OF THE L.A. TIMES

For days since the killings the Obama Administration has told the American people the reason for the killing was a video movie that made fun of the Prophet Mohamed

For example United States Ambassador to the United Nations, Susan Rice was  all over the Sunday talk shows saying:

“Our current best assessment, based on the information that we have at present, is that, in fact, what this began as, it was a spontaneous – not a premeditated – response to what had transpired in Cairo,”

"In Cairo, as you know, a few hours earlier, there was a violent protest that was undertaken in reaction to this very offensive video that was disseminated,”

As Victor Davis Hanson, a historian at the Hoover Institution writes:

Embarrassed White House press secretary Jay Carney and U.S. ambassador to the United Nations Susan Rice insisted that these assaults were just reactions to an insensitive video that disparaged Islam and was circulating on the Internet. As embassies burned, we were assured that there was no animosity directed at America in general, or at this administration and its foreign policy in particular.

That is hogwash. The weeks-old video was a mere pretext, in the manner of the Danish cartoons that Islamists used to stir up mobs in their war against the West. The street rioting was long ago synchronized across the Middle East to celebrate the eleventh anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.

Apparently, the administration was left stunned and without a clue about the latest Middle East madness.

*********

As a candidate and as president, Obama assumed that his own multicultural politics, his familiarity with Islam, his novel transracial personal story, and his repudiation of George W. Bush would all combine to win over the Middle East. Supposedly, Middle Eastern dislike of America had little to do with longstanding existential differences that did not start with Bush and won’t end with Obama.

Obama’s al Arabiya interview, Cairo speech, and loud reset diplomacy sent mixed messages. He gave the impression that Middle East anger was largely either America’s fault or due to misunderstandings that the sensitive Obama alone could mitigate — as he distanced himself from the supposed pathologies of prior American policy in the region.

That myth-making is now discredited. But it still makes it hard for the administration to admit that hatred in Egypt is deep-seated and irrational — and has very little to do with a silly video. Those in the Arab street hate the West and America because they are told daily that our supposed godlessness and decadence should not make us so rich and powerful — especially when such pious believers as themselves are so poor and impotent. But rather than addressing the real causes of their present misery — tribalism, misogyny, statism, corruption, authoritarianism, fundamentalism, and religious intolerance — amid rich natural resources, Islamists scapegoat. Sometimes they fume at American support for Israel, at other times at an obscure video, cartoon, or rumor of a torched Koran.

We only feed these adolescent tantrums when America wrongly apologizes for the occasional insensitivity of a few of our citizens, who enjoy free speech under the U.S. Constitution.

http://www.nationalreview.com/blogs/print/327849

What particularly outrages me is the fact the Obama Administration has been misleading the American people and covers for their incompetence by shifting the blame to an American citizen who made an insensitive video

Now CNN is reporting:

Sources tracking militant Islamist groups in the region said that a pro-al Qaeda group was the chief suspect and that the attack appeared to have been planned. The attackers used the protest as a diversion, the sources said.

If the Obama Administration would mislead us on this what else are they misleading us on. I am mad, very mad, at their incompetence  and dishonesty. Four good Americans died and more will die before this is all over. President Obama has time for David Letterman but not time for his daily intelligence briefings and to meet with our one strong ally in the Middle East, the leader of Israel, Prime Minister Netanyaho! While we spend our time  "fiddling" on a supposed gaffs by Mitt Romney and Obama immerses himself in our pop culture , the Middle East burns, and Iran is building "The Bomb!"

Now we know what it was like to be in the  Rome Empire during the fall part of the Rise and Fall!

Notice to Every Religious Believer in the World

The United States of America believes in Freedom of Speech and Freedom of Religion. If you, acting on your religious beliefs or otherwise  try to limit either of those Rights that all  Americans have or attack and/or injure Americans for excising those Rights , you are an enemy of mine and I will fight you to the death.

I will oppose any American elected leader who waivers from that position or finds excuses or rationalizations  for a religious follower that violates the above proposition .

The "Civil Rights Issue of our Day."

Condi Rice last night at the Republican Convention:
"Today, when I can look at your zip code and I can tell whether you’re going to get a good education, can I honestly say it does not matter where you came from, it matters where you are going? The crisis in K-12 education is a threat to the very fabric of who we are.

My mom was a teacher. I respect the profession. We need great teachers, not poor ones and not mediocre ones. We have to have high standards for our kids, because self-esteem comes from achievement, not from lax standards and false praise.

And we need to give parents greater choice, particularly, particularly poor parents whose kids, very often minorities, are trapped in failing neighborhood schools. This is the civil rights issue of our day.”
Condi Rice knows something about civil rights.  She closed her speech at tthe Republican Convention  with the following:

" And on a personal note, a little girl grows up in Jim Crow
Birmingham. The segregated city of the south where her parents

cannot take her to a movie theater or to restaurants, but they

have convinced that even if she cannot have it hamburger at

Woolworths, she can be the president of the United States if she

wanted to be, and she becomes the secretary of state.

(APPLAUSE)

Yes, yes. Yes. Yes, America has a way of making the

impossible seemed inevitable in retrospect, but we know it was

never inevitable. It took leadership. And it took courage. And

it's a belief that our values. Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan have

the integrity and the experience and the vision to lead us.

They know who we are. They know who we want to be. They know

who we are in the world and what we offer.

That is why -- that is why this is a moment and an election

of consequence. Because it just has to be that the freest most

compassionate country on the face of the earth will continue to

be the most powerful and the beacon for prosperity and the party

across the world.

God bless you and God bless this extraordinary country,

this exceptional country: The United States of America."

As someone who remembers Bull Connor, her speech last night,  brought tears to my eyes

Connor, in Birmingham. infamously directed the use of fire hoses, and police attack dogs against peaceful demonstrators, including children. His aggressive tactics backfired when the spectacle of the brutality was broadcast on national television

Paul Ryan has invigorated me politically

Paul Ryan has picked up the fallen flag of my kind of Conservatism and I have been giddy since I picked up the rumors on Twitter Friday night and he was to be formally picked by Mitt Romney on Saturday. In fact, I couldn't sleep very well Friday night in anticipation of the 7 AM PST  ceremony   at the site of the Battleship  Wisconsin  in Hampton Roads , Va.  I feel like a love sick teenager!

The line of succession  started with Goldwater, Reagan, Kemp and now Ryan. Since Jack Kemp died there has been no one I could say spoke for me in the leadership of my Republican Party. I had a very short "affair" with Sarah Palin but it didn't last very long when I realized there was not much there...there!

I can watch Ryan give a speech or interview and not be on "pins and needles" about a misstatement or mishap.  He has the easy likability of a Reagan and the enthusiasm of a Jack Kemp.He is a happy warrior.  He is Jimmy Stewart! He is smart  and fast on his feet. He articulates my love for America and the things that make it great. He knows the issues and can state them in  a way Americana's can understand. On the other hand he does not speak down to Americans. He and his family are perfect ! He is the Conservative Kennedy in that regard only in Ryan's case it is real.

In 1968 I wanted Nixon to pick Reagan for VP and we got Spiro Agnew..... enough said!

In 1976 I wanted Ford to pick Reagan for VP  and we got Bob Dole. A war hero but  also a political hack.

In 1980 I wanted Reagan to pick Jack Kemp for VP and not George H.W. Bush. George is a terrific guy but he would not lead the next generation of Conservatism and I was proved right.

In 1988 I wanted George H.W. Bush to pick Jack Kemp and we got Dan Quayle. I like Quayle but he wasn't the leader we needed for the next generation of Conservatism.

In 1996  Bob Dole finally did pick Jack Kemp for VP but it was too late.

In 2000  George W. Bush made an excellent pick for VP when he picked Dick Chaney. However because of heath issues Chaney would not lead the next generation of Conservatism.

Finally, when the hour is late for America, Paul Ryan is picked by Mitt Romney. The pick by Romney is a credit to him and gives me a lot of hope for his Presidency.

Time to make one last charge for the cause. Conservatives "saddle up."

Romney: "Like a watchman in the night, we must remain at our post"

Mitt Romney at the VFW Convention in Reno Nevada today:

From Berlin to Cairo to the United Nations, President Obama has shared his view of America and its place among nations. I have come here today to share mine.

I am an unapologetic believer in the greatness of this country. I am not ashamed of American power. I take pride that throughout history our power has brought justice where there was tyranny, peace where there was conflict, and hope where there was affliction and despair. I do not view America as just one more point on the strategic map, one more power to be balanced. I believe our country is the greatest force for good the world has ever known, and that our influence is needed as much now as ever. And I am guided by one overwhelming conviction and passion: This century must be an American Century.

In 1941, Henry Luce called on his countrymen – just then realizing their strength – “to create the first great American century.” And they succeeded: together with their allies, they won World War II, they rescued Europe, they defeated Communism, and America took its place as leader of the free world. Across the globe, they fought, they bled, they led. They showed the world the extraordinary courage of the American heart and the generosity of the American spirit.

That courage and generosity remains unchanged today. But sadly, this president has diminished American leadership, and we are reaping the consequences. The world is dangerous, destructive, chaotic. And the two men running to be your commander-in-chief must offer their answers to the challenges we face.

Like a watchman in the night, we must remain at our post – and keep guard of the freedom that defines and ennobles us, and our friends. In an American Century, we have the strongest economy and the strongest military in the world. In an American Century, we secure peace through our strength. And if by absolute necessity we must employ it, we must wield our strength with resolve. In an American Century, we lead the free world and the free world leads the entire world.

If we do not have the strength or vision to lead, then other powers will take our place, pulling history in a very different direction. A just and peaceful world depends on a strong and confident America. I pledge to you that if I become commander-in-chief, the United States of America will fulfill its duty, and its destiny.

American leadership depends, as it always has, on our economic strength, on our military strength, and on our moral strength. If any of these falter, no skill of diplomacy or presidential oratory can compensate. Today, the strength of our economy is in jeopardy.

A healthy American economy is what underwrites American power. When growth is missing, government revenue falls, social spending rises, and many in Washington look to cut defense spending as an easy out. That includes our current President.

Today, we are just months away from an arbitrary, across-the-board budget reduction that would saddle the military with a trillion dollars in cuts, severely shrink our force structure, and impair our ability to meet and deter threats. Don’t bother trying to find a serious military rationale behind any of this, unless that rationale is wishful thinking. Strategy is not driving President Obama’s massive defense cuts. In fact, his own Secretary of Defense warned that these reductions would be “devastating.” And he is right.

That devastation starts at home. These cuts would only weaken an already stretched VA system and impair our solemn commitment that every veteran receives care second to none. I will not allow that to happen.

This is not the time for the President’s radical cuts in the military. Look around the globe. Other major powers are rapidly adding to their military capabilities, some with intentions very different from ours. The regime in Tehran is drawing closer to developing a nuclear weapon. The threat of radical Islamic terrorism persists. The threat of weapons of mass destruction proliferation is ever-present. And we are still at war and still have uniformed men and women in conflict.

All this and more is ongoing in the world. And yet the President has chosen this moment for wholesale reductions in the nation’s military capacity. When the biggest announcement in his last State of the Union address on improving our military was that the Pentagon will start using more clean energy – then you know it’s time for a change.

We’re not the first people to observe this. It is reported that Bob Gates, the President’s first secretary of defense, bluntly addressed another security problem within this administration. After secret operational details of the bin Laden raid were given to reporters, Secretary Gates walked into the West Wing and told the Obama team to “shut up.” He added a colorful word for emphasis.

Lives of American servicemen and women are at stake. But astonishingly, the administration failed to change its ways. More top-secret operations were leaked, even some involving covert action in Iran.

This isn’t a partisan issue; it’s a national security crisis. And yesterday, Democrat Senator Dianne Feinstein, Chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, said, quote, “I think the White House has to understand that some of this is coming from their ranks.”

This conduct is contemptible. It betrays our national interest. It compromises our men and women in the field. And it demands a full and prompt investigation by a special counsel, with explanation and consequence. Obama appointees, who are accountable to President Obama’s Attorney General, should not be responsible for investigating the leaks coming from the Obama White House.

Whoever provided classified information to the media, seeking political advantage for the administration, must be exposed, dismissed, and punished. The time for stonewalling is over.

It is not enough to say the matter is being looked into, and leave it at that. When the issue is the political use of highly sensitive national security information, it is unacceptable to say, “We’ll report our findings after Election Day.”

Exactly who in the White House betrayed these secrets? Did a superior authorize it? These are things that Americans are entitled to know – and they are entitled to know right now. If the President believes – as he said last week – that the buck stops with him, then he owes all Americans a full and prompt accounting of the facts.

And let me make this very clear: These events make the decision we face in November all the more important. What kind of White House would reveal classified material for political gain? I’ll tell you right now: Mine won’t.

The harm done when national security secrets are betrayed extends, of course, to the trust that allies place in the United States.

The operating principle of American foreign policy has been to work with our allies so that we can deter aggression before it breaks out into open conflict. That policy depends on nurturing our alliances and standing up for our common values.

Yet the President has moved in the opposite direction.

It began with the sudden abandonment of friends in Poland and the Czech Republic. They had courageously agreed to provide sites for our anti-missile systems, only to be told, at the last hour, that the agreement was off. As part of the so-called reset in policy, missile defenses were sacrificed as a unilateral concession to the Russian government.

If that gesture was designed to inspire good will from Russia, it clearly missed the mark. The Russian government defended the dictator in Damascus, arming him as he slaughtered the Syrian people.

We can only guess what Vladimir Putin makes of the Obama administration. He regained the Russian presidency in a corrupt election, and for that, he got a congratulatory call from the Oval Office. And then there was that exchange picked up by a microphone that President Obama didn’t know was on. We heard him asking Dmitry Medvedev to tell Mr. Putin to give him “space.” “This is my last election,” President Obama said, and “After my election I’ll have more flexibility.”

Why is flexibility with Russian leaders more important than transparency to the American people?

President Obama had a moment of candor, however, just the other day. He said that the actions of the Venezuelan dictator Hugo Chavez have not had a serious national security impact on us. In my view, inviting Hezbollah into our hemisphere is severe, serious, and a threat.

But at least he was consistent. After all, this is the president who faltered when the Iranian people were looking for support in their struggle against the ayatollahs. That uprising was treated as an inconvenient problem for the President’s policy of engagement, instead of as a moral and strategic opportunity. That terrible misjudgment should never be repeated. When unarmed women and men in Tehran find the courage to confront their oppressors, at risk of torture and death, they should hear the unequivocal voice of an American president affirming their right to be free.

I will leave Reno this evening on a trip abroad that will take me to England, Poland, and Israel. And since I wouldn’t venture into another country to question American foreign policy, I will tell you right here – before I leave – what I think of this administration’s shabby treatment of one of our finest friends.

President Obama is fond of lecturing Israel’s leaders. He was even caught by a microphone deriding them. He has undermined their position, which was tough enough as it was. And even at the United Nations, to the enthusiastic applause of Israel’s enemies, he spoke as if our closest ally in the Middle East was the problem.

The people of Israel deserve better than what they have received from the leader of the free world. And the chorus of accusations, threats, and insults at the United Nations should never again include the voice of the President of the United States.

There are values, causes, and nations that depend on American strength, on the clarity of our purpose, and on the reliability of our commitments. There is work in this world that only America and our allies can do, hostile powers that only we can deter, and challenges that only we can overcome.

For the past decade, among those challenges has been the war in Afghanistan. As commander-in-chief, I will have a solemn duty to our men and women in uniform. A president owes our troops, their families, and the American people a clear explanation of our mission, and a commitment not to play politics with the decisions of war.

I have been critical of the President’s decision to withdraw the surge troops during the fighting season, against the advice of the commanders on the ground. President Obama would have you believe that anyone who disagrees with his decisions is arguing for endless war. But the route to more war – and to potential attacks here at home – is a politically timed retreat.

As president, my goal in Afghanistan will be to complete a successful transition to Afghan security forces by the end of 2014. I will evaluate conditions on the ground and solicit the best advice of our military commanders. And I will affirm that my duty is not to my political prospects, but to the security of the nation.

We face another continuing challenge in a rising China. China is attentive to the interests of its government – but it too often disregards the rights of its people. It is selective in the freedoms it allows; and, as with its one-child policy, it can be ruthless in crushing the freedoms it denies. In conducting trade with America, it permits flagrant patent and copyright violations … forestalls American businesses from competing in its market … and manipulates its currency to obtain unfair advantage. It is in our mutual interest for China to be a partner for a stable and secure world, and we welcome its participation in trade. But the cheating must finally be brought to a stop. President Obama hasn’t done it and won’t do it. I will.

We’ll need that same clarity of purpose and resolve in the Middle East. America cannot be neutral in the outcome there. We must clearly stand for the values of representative government, economic opportunity, and human rights. And we must stand against the extension of Iranian or jihadist influence.

Egypt is at the center of this historical drama. In many ways, it has the power to tip the balance in the Arab world toward freedom and modernity. As president, I will not only direct the billions in assistance we give to Egypt toward that goal, but I will also work with partner nations to place conditions on their assistance as well. Unifying our collective influence behind a common purpose will foster the development of a government that represents all Egyptians, maintains peace with Israel, and promotes peace throughout the region. The United States is willing to help Egypt support peace and prosperity, but we will not be complicit in oppression and instability.

There is no greater danger in the world today than the prospect of the ayatollahs in Tehran possessing nuclear weapons capability. Yet for all the talks and conferences, all of the extensions and assurances, can anyone say we are farther from this danger now than four years ago?

The same ayatollahs who each year mark a holiday by leading chants of “Death to America” are not going to be talked out of their pursuit of nuclear weapons. What’s needed is all the firmness, clarity, and moral courage that we and our allies can gather. Sanctions must be enforced without exception, cutting off the regime’s sources of wealth. Negotiations must secure full and unhindered access for inspections. As it is, the Iranian regime claims the right to enrich nuclear material for supposedly peaceful purposes. This claim is discredited by years of deception. A clear line must be drawn: There must be a full suspension of any enrichment, period.

And at every turn, Iran must know that the United States and our allies stand as one in these critical objectives. Only in this way can we successfully counter the catastrophic threat that Iran presents. I pledge to you and to all Americans that if I become commander-in-chief, I will use every means necessary to protect ourselves and the region, and to prevent the worst from happening while there is still time.

It is a mistake – and sometimes a tragic one – to think that firmness in American foreign policy can bring only tension or conflict. The surest path to danger is always weakness and indecision. In the end, it is resolve that moves events in our direction, and strength that keeps the peace.

I will not surrender America’s leadership in the world. We must have confidence in our cause, clarity in our purpose, and resolve in our might.

This is very simple: if you do not want America to be the strongest nation on earth, I am not your President. You have that President today.

The 21st century can and must be an American Century. It began with terror, war, and economic calamity. It is our duty to steer it onto the path of freedom, peace, and prosperity.

Fewer members of the Greatest Generation are with us today – and they can’t hold the torch as high as they have in the past. We must now seize the torch they carried so gallantly and at such sacrifice. It is an eternal torch of decency, freedom and hope. It is not America’s torch alone. But it is America’s duty – and honor – to hold it high enough so that all the world can see its light.

Believe in America.

Thank you and God Bless the United States of America.

Condi Rice: Time to "Storm Washington D.C."

"What we're feeling most is not just that tumult, we've been through tumult before, What we're feeling is the absence of American leadership....

"When our friends aren't certain that they can count on us — and they aren't so certain now — and when our foes don't fear us or respect us, this is what you get: tumultuous, dangerous chaotic times.....
**********
"It is a narrative that is being pushed by our current president, that 'I'm doing poorly because you're doing well,  That has never been the American narrative. Ours has never been a narrative of aggrievement, and ours has never been a narrative of entitlement. ........

"It is time for all of us, in any way we can, to mobilize, get our act together, and storm Washington D.C."
Condi Rice

She may not be my first choice for Vice President but I will "storm the barricades" with her!

MOVIE: "Act of Valor" *****

Just saw "Act of Valor" (2012) as a Netflix rental but will be buying the blu-ray edition in the near future. I loved the movie and will want to add it to my DVD collection. The story line according to IMDB:
An unprecedented blend of real-life heroism and original filmmaking, Act of Valor stars a group of active-duty Navy SEALs in a powerful story of contemporary global anti-terrorism. Inspired by true events, the film combines stunning combat sequences, up-to-the minute battlefield technology and heart-pumping emotion for the ultimate action adventure. Act of Valor takes audiences deep into the secretive world of the most elite, highly trained group of warriors in the modern world. When the rescue of a kidnapped CIA operative leads to the discovery of a deadly terrorist plot against the U.S., a team of SEALs is dispatched on a worldwide manhunt. As the valiant men of Bandito Platoon race to stop a coordinated attack that could kill and wound thousands of American civilians, they must balance their commitment to country, team and their families back home. Each time they accomplish their mission...
This movie is about the American warrior ethos. Men who are willing to kill Americas enemies without being conflicted or agonizing over it.. As is stated in the movie  "there are damn few" For all the reasons Rodger Ebert didn't like the movie I do! Ebert who was in SDS in college writes:

Act of Valor" is gift-wrapped in patriotism. It was once intended as a recruitment film, and that's how it plays.
So what's the problem! We need more movies like this.

One of my favorite quotes from the movie:

LT Rorke: Live your life that the fear of death can never enter your heart. Trouble no one about his religion. Respect others in their views and demand that they respect yours. Love your life, perfect your life. Beautify all things in your life. Seek to make your life long and of service to your people. When your time comes to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with fear of death, so that when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Sing your death song, and die like a hero going home.
~ Chief Tecumseh (Poem from Act of Valor the Movie)

One of the opening quotes from the movie:

“He said the worst thing about growing old is other men no longer see you as dangerous…dangerousness was sacred,” ..... “Your father was a reader. Churchill, of course, but also Faulker and books about Tecumseh.”

“We sleep safely at night because rough men stand ready to visit violence on those who would harm us.” ~ Sir Winston Churchill

Happy Birthday USA 1776-2012

149 Years Ago Today... Picketts Charge at Gettysburg

149 years ago today, July 3, 1863, the Union of the United States was saved when the center of the Union line at Gettysburg held and the South "never smiled again".

According to Wikipedia:
Pickett's Charge was an infantry assault ordered by Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee against Maj. Gen. George G. Meade's Union positions on Cemetery Ridge on July 3, 1863, the last day of the Battle of Gettysburg during the American Civil War. Its futility was predicted by the charge's commander, Lt. Gen. James Longstreet, and it was arguably an avoidable mistake from which the Southern war effort never fully recovered psychologically. The farthest point reached by the attack has been referred to as the high-water mark of the Confederacy

.
Approximately 12,500 men in nine infantry brigades advanced over open fields for three-quarters of a mile under heavy Union artillery and rifle fire. Although some Confederates were able to breach the low stone wall that shielded many of the Union defenders, they could not maintain their hold and were repulsed with over 50% casualties, a decisive defeat that ended the three-day battle and Lee's campaign into Pennsylvania.[1] Years later, when asked why his charge at Gettysburg failed, General Pickett replied: "I've always thought the Yankees had something to do with it."[2].......As the three Confederate divisions advanced, awaiting Union soldiers began shouting "Fredericksburg! Fredericksburg! Fredericksburg!" in reference to the disastrous Union advance on the Confederate line during the 1862 Battle of Fredericksburg.

Tomorrow is the 236 birthday of the United States but today is the day it was saved 149 years ago by men in blue holding Old Glory and willing to give their lives for that Union and to end the scourge of slavery.
