Here is one of my favorite passages from the Pulitzer Prize winning novel "The Killer Angels" by Michael Shaara about the battle of Gettysburg of the American Civil War. It is describing Colonel Joshua Chamberlain, the collage professor turned soldier and leader of the 20th Maine of the Union Army:
He had grown up believing in America and the individual and it was a srtonger faith than his faith in God. This was the land where no man had to bow. In this place at last a man could stand up free of the past, free of tradition and blood ties and the curse of royalty and become what he wished to become. This was the first place on earth where the man mattered more than the state. True freedom had begun here and it would spread eventually over all the earth. But it had begun here.In speaking to the 20th Maine on the march to Gettysburg he tells his men:
"I think if we lose this fight the war will be over"Later, he and the 20th Maine hold the end of the Union line at "Little Round Top" on the second day when he orders a bayonet charge when they run out of ammunition. He is awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for his actions.
At my age I have seen many a presidential election but I have come to the conclusion that while politics is not war, if we lose this election we lose the soul of America as described in the quote above. 2012 is a fork in the road. We take the irreversible road to Serfdom or we take a small step on the road to restoring individual freedom. Some of my fellow Conservatives/Libertarians think it's already too late. Not me...... but this is our last chance. If President Obama is re-elected there will be no reversal of Obama-care! There will be continued retreat in our leadership of the forces of freedom in the world. The debt that is killing this country will continue. The growth of the STATE at the loss of the INDIVIDUAL will be irreversible. More and more Americans will become dependent on the government until they are addicted and dependent to it's handouts. They are close to a majority already and once the addicted are the majority there will be no going back. Freedom will have died in the land where it was born. Already, we are being suffocated by government. Time to make a stand!
I am supporting Mitt Romney. He is not my first choice. He was the Governor of Massachusetts how conservative can he be? He is not as conservative as I am and is more willing to compromise. However, I think he is a good person with good intentions and values. His personal conduct will never embarrass Americans. He believes in America, and it's exceptionalism, and stands as a stark alternative to President Obama.
It's time for all freedom lovers to rally to Mitt Romney.
The full power and fury of the Democratic Chicago school of smear politics has been turned upon Mitt Romney aided by their allies in the Main Stream Media.
In the days between now and the election, every problem this country faces will be minimized and glossed over by the Main Stream Media. Every Obama gaff will be ignored or rationalized by the MSM. Every small or imagined gaff by Romney will be magnified and repeated over and over. Charges by the Obama campaign will be taken at face value and every statement by the Romney campaign will be challenged and questioned or rebutted by the press. This is a subject to which reasonable people cannot disagree. I first noticed it in the Goldwater campaign in 1964 and this is much worse. The MSM has invested a lot into Obama and they want to protect their investment. There are of course exceptions in the MSM . Here and there is a reporter who tries to be "fair" but they are the exception. Some of the bias is cultural because most reporters and editors live in an insular world where they all reinforce each others prejudices and predispositions developed in college and continuing on into the newsroom.
Unlike, in 1964, there are alternatives to the MSM. Talk radio, Fox News, the Internet have broken the MSM monopoly on information. That's why President Obama likes to personally attack Fox News. It's not the color of his skin that I dislike it's the lack of thickness. He is very thin skinned and does not take disagreement well.
However, in the end this election is not about the MSM ! It's about the growing power of the state at expense of individual freedom and responsibility. It's about the debt that will destroy us. It's about class warfare and the attempt to pit one American against another. This may be individualisms last stand!
Rally to Mitt Romney!
