This weekend it will have been 65 years and 9 months since VJ Day (Victory over Japan on August 14,1945). Thus, this week the first "Baby Boomers" will turn age 65 and will become qualified for Medicare. Here is a quote from a news article by Barbara Marshall of the Palm Beach Post:
They're big, self-entitled and appear poised to start sucking down federal benefits like a college student on free beer night.
The first wave of baby boomers — those Americans born during the sharp rise in births that lasted from 1946 until 1964 — starts turning 65 in 2011, making them eligible for Medicare, then full Social Security benefits beginning in 2012.
Just as they forced societal changes from infancy on, boomers will radically change retirement, demographers say..... 40 percent of those still working say they'll never retire.
