South Medford Wins Conference Championship!

The South Medford Panthers beat the Sheldon Irish of Eugene tonight in Medford 31 to 27 to go 5 an O in conference play to win the Southwestern Conference and earn a first round bye in the State of Oregon playoffs. This is the first time South has beat Sheldon since they became a part of the conference. It was a hard game. Sheldon lead by 7 points a halftime and with 40 or so seconds in the game had three downs from the South 10 yard line. A touchdown would have won the game for the Irish.South held on to win the game. Congratulations South Medford. There was a big crowd and a nice night to watch football. The temperature was 60 degrees with a strong wind that caused leaves to swirl on the artificial turf of the football field. On to State! Go Panthers.(Click on title for a link to the OSAA 6A State Championship brackets)

I'm an American. And I choose to fight.

Give em Hell, John:

"I'm an American. And I choose to fight. Don't give up hope. Be strong. Have courage. And fight. Fight for a new direction for our country. Fight for what's right for America.
Fight to clean up the mess of corruption, infighting and selfishness in Washington. Fight to get our economy out of the ditch and back in the lead.

Fight for the ideals and character of a free people.

Fight for our children's future.

Fight for justice and opportunity for all.

Stand up to defend our country from its enemies.

Stand up, stand up, stand up and fight. America is worth fighting for. Nothing is inevitable here. We never give up. We never quit. We never hide from history. We make history. Now, let's go win this election and get this country moving again"

"Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead! "

Admiral David Glasgow Farragut (1801-1870), the first senior officer of the U.S. Navy at the time of the American Civil War. Aboard Hartford, Farragut entered Mobile Bay, Alabama, 5 August 1864, in two columns, with armored monitors leading and a fleet of wooden ships following. When the lead monitor Tecumseh was demolished by a mine, the wooden ship Brooklyn stopped, and the line drifted in confusion toward Fort Morgan. As disaster seemed imminent, Farragut gave the orders embodied by these famous words. He swung his own ship clear and headed across the mines, which failed to explode. The fleet followed and anchored above the forts, which, now isolated, surrendered one by one. The torpedoes to which Farragut and his contemporaries referred would today be described as tethered mines.

Open Letter to Barak Obama

This letter is from a Mister Cory Miller, who made it the hard way.
He points out how Obama , if elected, will be wrong for him and other self-made men like himself, and for America. Yes, it's a long read, but he makes some very inportant points. His letter follows.

Mr. Obama,
Given the uproar about the simple question asked you by Joe the plumber, and the persecution that has been heaped on him because he dared to question you, I find myself motivated to say a few things to you myself. While Joe aspires to start a business someday, I already have started not one, but 4 businesses. But first, let me introduce myself. You can call me 'Cory the well driller'. I am a 54 year old high school graduate. I didn't go to college like you, I was too ready to go 'conquer the world' when I finished high school. 25 years ago at age 29, I started my own water well drilling business at a time when the economy here in East Texas was in a tailspin from the crash of the early 80's oil boom. I didn't get any help from the government, nor did I look for any. I borrowed what I could from my sister, my uncle, and even the pawn shop and managed to scrape together a homemade drill rig and a few tools to do my first job. My businesses did not start not a result of privilege. It is the result of my personal drive, personal ambition, self discipline, self reliance, and a determination to treat my customers fairly. From the very start my business provided one other (than myself) East Texan a full time job. I couldn't afford a backhoe the first few years (something every well drilling business had), so I and my helper had to dig the mud pits that are necessary for each and every job with hand shovels. I had to use my 10 year old, 1/2 ton pickup truck for my water tank truck (normally a job for at least a 2 ton truck).
A year and a half after I started the business, I scraped together a 20% down payment to get a modest bank loan and bought a (28 year) old, worn out, slightly bigger drilling rig to allow me to drill the deeper water wells in my area. I spent the next few years drilling wells with the rig while simultaneously rebuilding it between jobs. Through these years I never knew from one month to the next if I would have any work or be able to pay the bills. I got behind on my income taxes one year, and spent the next two years paying that back (with penalty and interest) while keeping up with ongoing taxes. I got behind on my water well supply bill 2 different years (way behind the second time... $80,000.00), and spent over a year paying it back (each time) while continuing to pay for ongoing supplies C.O.D.. Of course, the personal stress endured through these experiences and years is hard to measure. I do have a ste nt in my heart now to memorialize it all.
I spent the next 10 years developing the reputation for being the most competent and most honest water well driller in East Texas. 2 years along the way, I hired another full time employee for the drilling business so that we could provide full time water well pump service as well as the well drilling. Also, 3 years along the path, I bought a water well screen service machine from a friend, starting business # 2. 5 years later I made a business loan for $100,000.00 to build a new, higher production, computer controlled screen service machine. I had designed the machine myself, and it didn't work out for 3 years so I had to make the loan payments without the benefit of any added income from the new machine. No government program was there to help me with the payments, or to help m e sleep at night as I lay awake wondering how I would solve my machine problems or pay my bills. Finally, after 3 years, I got the screen machine working properly, and that provided another full time job for an East Texan in the screen service business.
2 years after that, I made another business loan, this time for $250,000.00, to buy another used drilling rig and all the support equipment needed to run another, larger, drill rig. This provided another 2 full time jobs for East Texans. Again, I spent a couple of years not knowing if I had made a smart move, or a move that would bankrupt me. For the third time in 13 years, I had placed everything I owned on the line, risking everything, in order to build a business.
A couple of years into this, I came up with a bright idea for a new kind of mud pump, a fundamentally necessary pump used on water well drill rigs. I spent my entire life savings to date (just $30,000.00), building a prototype of the pump and took it to the national water well convention to show it off. Customers immediately started coming out of the woodworks to buy the pumps, but there was a problem. I had depleted my assets making the prototype, and nobody would make me a business loan to start production of the new pumps. With several deposits for pump orders in hand, and nowhere to go, I finally started applying for as many credit card as I could find and took cash withdrawals on these cards to the tune of over $150,000.00 (including modest loans from my dear sister and brother), to get this 3rd business going.
Yes, once again, I had everything hanging over the line in an effort to start another business. I had never manufactured anything, and I had to design and bring into production a complex hydraulic machine from an untested prototype to a reliable production model (in six months). How many nights I lay awake wondering if I had just made the paramount mistake of my life I cannot tell you, but there were plenty. I managed to get the pumps into production, which immediately created another 2 full time jobs in East Texas. Some of the models in the first year suffered from quality issues due to the poor workmanship of one of my key suppliers, so I and an employee (another East Texan employed) had to drive across the country to repair customers' pumps, practically from coast to coast. I stood behind the product, and made paymen ts to all the credit cards that had financed me (and my brother and sister). I spent the next 5 years improving and refining the product, building a reputation for the pump and the company, working to get the pump into drill rig manufacturers' product lines, and paying back credit cards. During all this time I continued to manage a growing water well business that was now operating 3 drill rig crews, and 2 well service crews. Also, the screen service business continued to grow. No government programs were there to help me, Mr. Obama, but that's ok, I didn't expect any, nor did I want any. I was too busy fighting to make success happen to sit around waiting for the government to help me.
Now, we have been manufacturing the mud pumps for 7 years, my combined businesses employ 32 full time employees, and distribute $5,000,000.00 annually through the local economy. Now, just 4 months ago I borrowed $1,254,000.00, purchasing computer controlled machining equipment to start my 4th business, a production machine shop. The machine shop will serve the mud pump company so that we can better manufacture our pumps that are being shipped worldwide. Of course, the machine shop will also do work for outside companies as well. This has already produced 2 more full time jobs, and 2 more should develop out of it in the next few months. This should work out, but if it doesn't it will be because you, and the other professional politicians like yourself, will have destroyed our countrys' (and the world) economy with your meddling with mortgage loan programs through your liberal manipulation and intimidation of l oaning institutions to make sure that unqualified borrowers could get mortgages. You see, at the very time when I couldn't get a business loan to get my mud pumps into production, you were working with Acorn and the Community Reinvestment Act programs to make sure that unqualified borrowers could buy homes with no down payment, and even no credit or worse yet, bad credit. Even the infamous, liberal, Ninja loans (No Income, No Job or Assets). While these unqualified borrowers were enjoying unrealistically low interest rates, I was paying 22% to 24% interest on the credit cards that I had used to provide me the funds for the mud pump business that has created jobs for more East Texans. It's funny, because after 25 years of turning almost every dime of extra money back into my businesses to grow them, it has been only in the last two years that I have finally made enough money to be able to put a little away for retirement, and now the value of that has dropped 40% because of the poli cies you and your ilk have perpetrated on our country.
You see, Mr. Obama, I'm the guy you intend to raise taxes on. I'm the guy who has spent 25 years toiling and sweating, fretting and fighting, stressing and risking, to build a business and get ahead. I'm the guy who has been on the very edge of bankruptcy more than a dozen times over the last 25 years, and all the while creating more and more jobs for East Texans who didn't want to take a risk, and wouldn't demand from themselves what I have demanded from myself. I'm the guy you characterize as 'the Americans who can afford it the most' that you believe should be taxed more to provide income redistribution 'to spread the wealth' to those who have never toiled, sweated, fretted, fought, stressed, or risked anything. You want to characterize me as someone who has enjoyed a life of privilege and who needs to pay a higher percentage of my income than those who have bough t into your entitlement culture. I resent you, Mr. Obama, as I resent all who want to use class warfare as a tool to advance their political career. What's worse, each year more Americans buy into your liberal entitlement culture, and turn to the government for their hope of a better life instead of themselves. Liberals are succeeding through more than 40 years of collaborative effort between the predominant liberal media, and liberal indoctrination programs in the public school systems across our land.
What is so terribly sad about this is this. America was made great by people who embraced the one-time American culture of self reliance, self motivation, self determination, self discipline, personal betterment, hard work, risk taking. A culture built around the concept that success was in reach on every able bodied American who would strive for it. Each year that less Americans embrace that culture, we all descend together. We descend down the socialist path that has brought country after country ultimately to bitter and unremarkable states. If you and your liberal comrades in the media and school systems would spend half as much effort cultivating a culture of can-do across America as you do cultivating your entitlement culture, we could see Americans at large embracing the co nviction that they can elevate themselves through personal betterment, personal achievement, and self reliance. You see, when people embrace such ideals, they act on them. When people act on such ideals, they succeed. All of America could find herself elevating instead of deteriorating. But that would eliminate the need for liberal politicians, wouldn't it, Mr. Obama? The country would not need you if the country was convinced that problem solving was best left with individuals instead of the government. You and all your liberal comrades have got a vested interested in creating a dependent class in our country. It is the very business of liberals to create an ever expanding dependence on government. What's remarkable is that you, who h ave never produced a job in your life, are going to tax me to take more of my money and give it to people who wouldn't need my money if they would get off their entitlement mentality asses and apply themselves at work, demand more from themselves, and quit looking to liberal politicians to raise their station in life.
You see, I know because I've had them work for me before. Hundreds of them over these 25 years. People who simply will not show up to work on time. People who just will not work 5 days in a week, much less, 6 days. People always looking for a way to put less effort out. People who actually tell me that they would do more if I just would first pay them more. People who take off work to sit in government offices to apply to get free government handouts (gee, I wonder how things would have turned out for them if they had spent that time earning money and pleasing their employer?). You see, all of this comes from your entitlement mentality culture.
Oh, I know you will say I am uncompassionate. Sorry, Mr. Obama, wrong again. You see, I've seen what the average percentage of your income has been given to charities over the years of 2000 to 2004 (ignoring the years you started running for office - can you pronounce "politically motivated"), you averaged of less than 1% annually. And your running mate, Joe Biden, averaged less than ¼% of his annual income in charitable contributions over the last 10 years. Like so many liberals, the two of you want to give to the needy, just as long as it is someone else's money you are giving to them. I won't say what I have given to charities over the last 25 years, but the percentage is several times more than you or Joe Biden (don't you just hate google?). Tell me again how you feel my pain.
In short, Mr. Obama, your political philosophies represent everything that is wrong with our country. You represent the culture of government dependence instead of self reliance; Entitlement mentality instead of personal achievement; Penalization of the successful to reward the unmotivated; Political correctness instead of open mindedness and open debate. If you are successful, you may preside over the final transformation of America from being the greatest and most self-reliant culture on earth, to just another country of whiners and wimps, who sit around looking to the government to solve their problems. Like all of w estern Europe. All countries on the decline. All countries that, because of liberal socialistic mentalities, have a little less to offer mankind every year.
God help us...

Cory Miller
just a ordinary, extraordinary American, the way a lot of Americans used to be.

Halloween

This is a post I made in 2005 which I have updated a bit.

Halloween is one of those holidays when you wish your kids were still 2 or 3 or 4 years of age.

I remember back to when I took our young kids out "trick or treating" or covering the living room floor with newspapers to help them carve out pumpkins. I will never forget the time our son, age 2 or so, figured out what "trick or treating" was all about. It was like a light went on in his head; "hey, you walk up to some one's door and they give you candy." I remember when our daughter went out as a princes or the Swiss dress outfit she wore, oh ...so many years ago. My regret is that I did not let them go that extra block they always want to go.

Why I am for John McCain

Speech given by Senator John McCain today.

Victory must still be secured, in Iraq and Afghanistan. Senator Obama opposed removing the dictator in Iraq, and now obstinately opposes the need to defend the young democracy in that country — even with victory so clearly in sight. He cites as his most courageous moment in public life a speech he gave in 2002 — against a war resolution on which he had no vote, on a matter of national security for which he bore no responsibility. He hopes you will forget the votes he cast when he actually did have responsibility ... his votes to prevent the strategy that is leading to victory, and to deny funding for the troops who are gaining that victory. And now he hopes that in the cloud of crisis at home you will forget the stakes in Iraq — the disaster and tragedy that would follow if American forces leave in retreat.

With terrorists still plotting new strikes across the world, millions of innocent lives are still at stake, including American lives. Our enemies' violent ambitions must still be prevented — by American vigilance, by diplomacy and cooperation with our partners, and by force of arms as a last resort. In his four years in the Senate, two of them spent running for president, Barack Obama has displayed some impressive qualities. But the question is whether this is a man who has what it takes to protect America from Osama bin Laden, al Qaeda, and other grave threats in the world. And he has given you no reason to answer in the affirmative.

Senator Joe Biden has a way of straying off message and stumbling on the truth, and his most recent warning bears close attention. He cautioned us — in fact, he guaranteed his listeners — that because he is untested Barack Obama would only invite an international crisis. And we know well what one of those crises could be — the success of the Iranian regime in its program of acquiring nuclear weapons. If such a thing were to happen, our troubles of today would dramatically escalate, as a nuclear-armed Iran threatened Israel or sparked an uncontrollable nuclear arms race across the region.

In the same way, my opponent assumes far more good will than is warranted from Kim Jong Il, the tyrant of North Korea ... Hugo Chavez, the leader of Venezuela who wishes to export instability to neighboring countries ... and the Castro brothers, who have given Cuba fifty years' worth of socialist misery and are still at it. In each case, Senator Obama presents his plan for direct talks as if no one before had ever considered that. He seems unaware that mere talk has been tried many times, to no avail and that our adversaries recognize such gestures as a sign of weakness.

They will draw similar assumptions from the plans, already proposed by the chairman of the House Finance Committee, Congressman Barney Frank, to cut defense spending by 25 percent. Even with our troops engaged in two wars, and with a force in need of rebuilding, we're getting a glimpse of what one-party rule would look like under Obama, Pelosi, and Reid. Apparently it starts with lowering our defenses and raising our taxes.

Our national security is dependent on our economic security, and the plans of a Democratic dominated Washington would harm both. Raising taxes and unilaterally renegotiating trade agreements as they have promised would make a bad economy even worse, and undermine our national security, even as they slash defense spending. At least when European nations chose the path of higher taxes and cutting defense, they knew that their security would still be guaranteed by America. But if America takes the same path, who will guarantee our security?

In an unusual refrain for a closing argument, Senator Obama has lately taken to telling America that on many great issues, quote, "we don't have to choose." It is a fitting motto for a man who throughout his career has so often voted "present," instead of giving a simple "yes" or "no." But ladies and gentlemen, there is a time for choosing. It is six days away. America has a decision to make, on these fateful questions and more. And when you cast your vote, my fellow citizens, let there be no confusion about the threats we face and the costs of failing to meet them.

I've had to make a few defining choices of my own along the way. One of them came last year, when I told you that I would rather lose an election than see my country lose a war. I chose that course because I know the quality of those who fight our wars, but also because I know the character of the American people. I believed that you, too, would persevere in support of our most fundamental interests in the world — and you did, America. You gave our troops time to complete their mission, and they almost have. And at a crucial hour in a vital cause, that has made all the difference. Because of that support, our troops will soon come home in victory.

We have passed through a difficult time, and more courage will be needed in the years ahead. But there is a direction to events, and the sacrifices of the present have not been in vain. We will build on our hard-won victories to extend the security of our nation and of every nation that seeks to live in freedom. We will not yield to intimidation, and by our strength we will prevent threats from turning into tragedies. This is America's work in the world, as it has always been in our finest moments. We are called still to spread liberty, to assure justice, to be the makers of peace. And this is the great work I will carry on as your president and commander in chief. Thank you very much

Obama's Infomercial

Just remember if you watch Barak Obama's Infomercial tonight that the only way he can afford it is he broke his promise to accept public financing of his campaign. My bet is he will also break his promise to not raise taxes on the middle class if he is elected President. "Not available in stores" There is also no money back offer if you aren't completely satisfied if he wins the election !

Comcast and Oregon Duck Games

The Medford Mail Tribune has an interesting article today on why most Southern Oregon Duck fans will not get up to 14 Oregon Duck basketball game this winter. The article deals primarily with the Portland Trailblazer games but Comcast sports broadcasts both Oregon Duck and Trailblazer basketball games and the reason why Southern Oregon fans are not getting the games is the same. Click on the title for the link. I have heard from several reliable sources, who should know, that Comcast wants $2.00 per Charter Cable subscriber per month 12 months a year and Charter knows that if they pass that cost on to their subscriber there will be a big protest because most subscribers are not willing to pay more for Oregon and Trailblazer games.

My guess is that Comcast agreed to pay the Ducks and the Trailblazers too much money for the TV rights and are now stuck not being able to get local (Oregon) cable TV companies to pay enough to cover their costs. Other than Oregon and Trailblazer games Comcast Sports does not have enough other quality programing to justify the price they are asking from Cable TV companies. In addition, the satellite TV providers such as The Dish and Direct TV area also unwilling to carry Comcast Sports.

Comcast is so desperate they have been running full page color ads in the Medford Mail Tribune sports section just about every Sunday to get Duck and Trailblazer fans to call Charter or their Satellite provider. Update, I just got back from a lunch walk and saw a billboard in downtown Medford paid for by Comcast again trying to get fans to call Charter etc.

What happend to the Peoples right to know?

The John McCain campaign is demanding that the Los Angeles Times release the videotape they posses of Barack Obama toasting former PLO spokesman Rashid Khalidi, at a party attended by radical Palestinian activists and former Weather Underground terrorists Bill Ayers and Bernardine Dohrn. The L.A. Times is refusing to release the tape in order to help Obama.

L.A. Times..... release the tapes!

If the L.A. Times had a video tape of a party in which John McCain was toasting some one from the KKK you bet the tape would be on every broadcast in America 24 hours a day!

Want to look at this for the next four years?

'Twas the night before elections

Someone sent me an email of this:

'Twas the night before elections
And all through the town
Tempers were flaring
Emotions all up and down!

I, in my bathrobe
With a cat in my lap
Had cut off the TV
Tired of political crap.

When all of a sudden
There arose such a noise
I peered out of my window
Saw Obama and his friends

They had come for my wallet
They wanted my pay
To give to the others
Who had not worked a day!

He snatched up my money
And quick as a wink
Jumped back on his bandwagon
As I gagged from the stink

He then rallied his henchmen
Who were pulling his cart
I could tell they were out
To tear my country apart!

" On Fannie, on Freddie,
On Biden and Ayers!
On Acorn, On Pelosi"
He screamed at the pairs!

They took off for his cause
And as he flew out of sight
I heard him laugh at the nation
Who wouldn't stand up and fight!

So I leave you to think
On this one final note-
IF YOU DONT WANT SOCIALISM GET OUT AND VOTE!!!!

Tax the rich and give to the poor!

Mitt Romney when he ended his campaign gave the perfect response to Barak Obama's "Spread the Wealth" philosophy and his tax plan to tax the rich and give money to the poor and why he is so dangerous to this country.

The threat to our culture comes from within. The 1960’s welfare programs created a culture of poverty. Some think we won that battle when we reformed welfare, but the liberals haven’t given up. At every turn, they try to substitute government largesse for individual responsibility. They fight to strip work requirements from welfare, to put more people on Medicaid, and to remove more and more people from having to pay any income tax whatsoever. Dependency is death to initiative, risk-taking and opportunity. Dependency is a culture-killing drug—we have got to fight it like the poison it is!

Barak Obama will increase the culture of dependency in this country and that is just as addictive as drugs. Once the majority is hooked then government will grow stronger and stronger and our economy and freedom will grow weaker and weaker.Government will end up our master just as the drug pusher is the addicts master.

Already the growth of more and more government is chocking our individualism and initiative. It robs the risk taker of the gains of his risk and labor and takes the dignity of those it helps who are capable of helping themselves. Our founding fathers knew this but Obama does not!

McCain is closing the gap..... Obama's lead has shrunk to 4 points!

Rasmussen Obama +5
Gallop Traditional +2
Gallop Expanded +7
Zogby +4
Battleground +3
IBD/Tipp +3
Average +4

This morning while I was getting ready for work I watched Obama and then Palin and then John McCain give their stump speech. My impression is that Obama is sitting on his lead and trying to run the clock out. Palin is a real star! She wont always be "inexperienced" but she will always have charisma. McCain is hitting pay dirt on Obama's "spread the wealth" and redistribution of wealth remarks.McCain ended his speech with the following and he was very emotion in a kind of "Give them hell Harry sort of way:

My answer to you is yes. Yes, we will lead. Yes, we will prosper. Yes, we will be safer. Yes, we will pass on to our children a stronger, better country. But we must be prepared to act swiftly, boldly, with courage and wisdom.

I'm an American. And I choose to fight.

Now, let's go win this election and get this country moving again.

Obama: The U.S. Constitution is flawed !

Looks like Barak Obama and his pastor of 20 years the Reverend Wright are not that far apart in hating America.

Barak Obama:"The Constitution reflected an enormous blind spot in this culture that caries on to this day... the Framers has that same blind spot..." (Listen to it on You Tube by clicking on the title for a link.) Also see post below.

Obama:"put together the actual coalition of powers through which you bring about redistributive change."

Joe the Plumber was just the tip of the iceberg! This from Drudge and Michelle Malkin's blog:

Barack Obama musing about how best to redistribute wealth in America in a Chicago Public Radio interview in 2001. (Click on the title for a you tube audio of the Obama interview)In the interview Barak Obama said:

If you look at the victories and failures of the civil rights movement and its litigation strategy in the court. I think where it succeeded was to invest formal rights in previously dispossessed people, so that now I would have the right to vote. I would now be able to sit at the lunch counter and order as long as I could pay for it I’d be o.k. But, the Supreme Court never ventured into the issues of redistribution of wealth, and of more basic issues such as political and economic justice in society. To that extent, as radical as I think people try to characterize the Warren Court, it wasn’t that radical. It didn’t break free from the essential constraints that were placed by the founding fathers in the Constitution, at least as its been interpreted and Warren Court interpreted in the same way, that generally the Constitution is a charter of negative liberties. Says what the states can’t do to you. Says what the Federal government can’t do to you, but doesn’t say what the Federal government or State government must do on your behalf, and that hasn’t shifted and one of the, I think, tragedies of the civil rights movement was, um, because the civil rights movement became so court focused I think there was a tendancy to lose track of the political and community organizing and activities on the ground that are able to put together the actual coalition of powers through which you bring about redistributive change. In some ways we still suffer from that.

The bottom line from Jeff Goldstein:

In Obama’s America, we’ll finally be able to break free of the “constraints that were placed by the founding fathers in the Constitution” — and in so doing, achieve “social justice” through “redistributive change.”

Well, then. Fine .

But this is not the America I knew…

KGO, Ira Blue & The Hungry i

This morning I was listening to my Kingston Trio album "....from the Hungry i" and it brought back memories from my youth, growing up, in Coos Bay, Oregon. In the early 1960's Coos Bay was a fairly isolated place on the Oregon coast. If you had cable TV you got the the three networks and an independent station from Portland that featured Portland Wrestling and old movies. There were three radio stations that played music and a newspaper.... the Coos Bay World and on Sunday we got the Portland Journal. There was no Internet, or cable news channels. My parents were fairly strict and even late into our teens we had a time we had to be in bed on school nights much earlier than I believed was necessary. I have always been a "night owl". However, I had a radio with a earphone jack and so I would late into the night listen to KGO radio from San Francisco broadcast live from the Hungy i with Ira Blu as the host. According to Wikipedia:
The hungry i was a legendary San Francisco nightclub operated in the mid-1950s and early 1960s by Enrico Banducci at 599 Jackson Street in the North Beach district. The hungry i was instrumental in launching the careers of singer Barbra Streisand and comedians Lenny Bruce, Mort Sahl, Jonathan Winters, Professor Irwin Corey, Woody Allen, Dick Cavett, Phyllis Diller, the Smothers Brothers, and Joan Rivers.

The club also featured folk singers such as Peter,Paul & Mary and The Kingston Trio. The comedians or singers would often stop by the Radio booth and visit. A very cosmopolitan world for a kid in Coos Bay.

50,000 watt radio Station KGO would broadcast live from the Hungy i and its voice would pierce the dark winter nights to isolated Coos Bay and brought a different world to me of hip comedians and folk music that I love to this day.

KGO was one of the first "talk radio" stations. According to Wikipedia:

In 1962, ABC management brought in new management including a program director, Jim Dunbar, who revamped the station into one of the country's first news/talk stations. While the new format was initially unsuccessful, Dunbar stressed the "live and local" aspect of the programming by running the talk shows every day from locations such as Johnny Kan's Chinese restaurant, Senor Pico's Restaurant, and the legendary Hungry i nightclub. This higher profile caused KGO's ratings to begin a steady climb. Among KGO's personalities then was future Radio Hall of Fame member J.P. McCarthy, the station's morning host in the early 1960s.

Oregon Ducks vs Arizona State

The University of Oregon Ducks travel to Tempe Arizona for a 7 PM football game Saturday night. The game will not be on TV so I will be listening to Jerry Allen and Mike Jorgensen on the radio.Go Ducks beat the Sun Devils

South Medford Wins!

The South Medford Panthers beat the Roseburg Indians 41 to 7 at South on a beautiful October night in Medford.I can remember a few years ago when we drove up to Roseburg and the Indians blew out Medford in an ugly game. Revenge is sweet. Roseburg has the same colors as the Oregon State Beaver (black and orange) which is another reason I love beating them. Next week, Halloween night, South Medford will host the Sheldon Irish of Eugene for the Southwest Conference Championship and the number one playoff spot.
South Medford is ranked #3 in the State of Oregon

McCain has cut into Obama's lead for a second day and is now just 1.1 points behind. The spread was 3.7 Wednesday and 6.0 Tuesday. The Republican is making headway with middle- and working- class voters, and has surged 10 points in two days among those earning between $30,000 and $75,000. He has also gone from an 11-point deficit to a 9-point lead among Catholics.

Would the last honest reporter please turn out the lights!

Great column about his years Presidential contest and the press coverage by a reporter who happens to be a Democrat. (click on title for a link)

e-mail Photo from Iraq

I picked this up over at Michelle Malkin's blog:

A Naval officer e-mails today’s photo of the day and writes: “I obviously can’t speak for all the troops, but I can definitely speak for one - I am a Naval officer currently deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom…The Taliban and al Qaeda don’t scare me nearly as bad as this election does…We’ll take care of things over here, but we’re counting on you and others like you to fight the fight back home, even after the election, whichever way it goes. Hang in there. We appreciate everything you do.”

We appreciate everything you do.

**************************

A recent Military Times poll found that active duty U.S. military members support John McCain over Barack Obama to be their next commander-in-chief by a margin of 68%-23%.

Obama's support among the services is lowest in the Marine Corps (18%.)

Conservatives who break Ranks!

Tony Blankley has an excellent column today about Peggy Noonan, David Brooks, Chris Buckley, David Frum and Kathleen Parker. (Click on the title for a link.) In times of crisis there are those who step up and hold the line and there are those, such as the above named, who flee to the rear. This is a free country and I believe in a big tent conservative movement but this is not a time to break ranks in the face of the enemy. As Blankley writes:
The new conservative movement will be facing a political opponent that will reveal itself soon to be both multiculturalist and Eurosocialist. We will be engaged in a struggle to the political death for the soul of the country. As I did at the beginning of and throughout the Buckley/Goldwater/Reagan/Gingrich conservative movement, I will try to lend my hand. I certainly will do what I can to make it a big-tent conservative movement. But just as it does in every great cause, one question has to be answered correctly: Whose side are you on, comrade?

We need some folks to step in and fill in the holes in the line and catch the falling flag.

As a side note.... as a kid I owned the above classic comic and saw the movie with Audie Murphy at a drive-in movie with my parents.

Polls

Not much good news in most of the polls but the Battleground poll has it a one point race in favor of Obama! Rasmussen has it at +4 for Obama! Both are respected polls.

John McCain:

Don't give up hope. Be strong. Have courage. And fight.

Fight for a new direction for our country.

Fight for what's right for America.

Fight to clean up the mess of corruption, infighting and selfishness in Washington.

Fight to get our economy out of the ditch and back in the lead.

Fight for the ideals and character of a free people.

Fight for our children's future.

Fight for justice and opportunity for all.

Stand up to defend our country from its enemies
.

John McCain: "The hour is late; our troubles are getting worse; our enemies watch."

John McCain made the above statement in a speech on October 13, 2008. Less than a week later on October 19,2008 Joe Biden, Barak Obama's VP nominee said:

Mark my words, It will not be six months before the world tests Barack Obama like they did John Kennedy. The world is looking. We’re about to elect a brilliant 47-year-old senator president of the United States of America. Remember I said it standing here if you don’t remember anything else I said. Watch, we’re gonna have an international crisis, a generated crisis, to test the mettle of this guy.”
“I can give you at least four or five scenarios from where it might originate,” Biden said to Emerald City supporters, mentioning the Middle East and Russia as possibilities. “And he’s gonna need help. And the kind of help he’s gonna need is, he’s gonna need you - not financially to help him - we’re gonna need you to use your influence, your influence within the community, to stand with him. Because it’s not gonna be apparent initially, it’s not gonna be apparent that we’re right.”

Bill Kristol's take:

So Biden expects a test of the kind Kennedy faced after his disastrous meeting with Khrushchev in Vienna in June, 1961, less than five months into Kennedy’s presidency. Biden’s presumably thinking of the Soviet-backed construction of the Berlin Wall a couple of months later. Kennedy did nothing, and was criticized for his weakness back home.

So--leaving aside the merits of what Kennedy did or didn’t do in 1961--Biden is forecasting that Obama will have what seems to be a weak response to a provocation from, say, Iran or Russia, and he’s urging the liberals of Seattle and elsewhere to stand with Obama against the expected domestic criticism.

In other words, Biden is forecasting inaction by Obama in the face of testing by a dictator. I suspect he’s right in this forecast. McCain might want to clarify this point. It’s not just that Obama’s own running mate expects an international crisis early in his presidency. It’s not just that Obama has a weak foreign policy record. It’s that Biden himself expects what will appear to be a weak response from Obama to testing by a dictator.

Now Biden presumaby thinks such an apparently weak response would be in our long-term interest. But McCain needs to force that debate: “Sen. Obama, will you in fact do nothing in response to a Putin provocation against Ukraine or a final push by Ahmadinejad toward nuclear weapons? Isn’t that what your running mate has forecast? Isn’t it awfully dangerous to forecast weakness on the part of an American president?”

Barak Obama: Buy William Ayers Book

Obama, who has downplayed relationship with domestic terrorist William Ayers, gave a glowing endorsement of his book in the Dec. 21, 1997 Chicago Tribune.
Barack Obama, who has consistently downplayed his relationship with William Ayers during his presidential campaign, once gave a glowing endorsement of a book by the former domestic terrorist and was mentioned by name in the book itself.

From a Fox News Report:

A blogger unearthed the Dec. 21, 1997, endorsement in the Chicago Tribune and posted photographs of the praise for Ayers' book on Zombietime.com Saturday.

Featured next to a smiling photograph of himself, then-State Senator Obama called Ayers' book, "A Kind and Just Parent: Children of the Juvenile Court," a "searing and timely account of the juvenile court system, and the courageous individuals who rescue hope from despair."

The book, which details life at the Chicago Juvenile Court prison school, mentions Obama by name on page 82 when it describes Chicago's Hyde Park neighborhood:.......

A month before the item appeared, on Nov. 20, 1997, Michelle Obama, then dean of student services and director of the University Community Service Center, held a panel at the University of Chicago that featured both Barack Obama and Ayers."Ayers will be joined by Sen. Barack Obama, Senior Lecturer in the Law School, who is working to combat legislation that would put more juvenile offenders into the adult system," the University of Chicago Chronicle reported on Nov. 6, 1997.
(click on title for a link to news story)

Barak Obama at a primary debate on April 16, 2008:

This is a guy who lives in my neighborhood, who's a professor of English in Chicago who I know and who I have not received some official endorsement from. He's not somebody who I exchange ideas from on a regular basis.

E.J. Singler a Duck!

As a big fan of both the South Medford Panthers and the University of Oregon Ducks this is good news. The following is from the Register Guard:

This just in: E.J. Singler of South Medford High School said he verbally committed to the Ducks (basketball) during his weekend visit.

The 6-foot-6 Singler is the first recruit for the Ducks in this 2009 recruiting class. He’s the younger brother of Kyle Singler, a sophomore at Duke, and a member of quite an athletic family from the southern Oregon area.

Singler is also a receiver on the South Medford football team, but he said he won’t play football after his final high school season.

My wife and I have had season tickets for South Medford basketball and football for a number of years and we have been impressed by the athletic ability and sportsmanship of both Singler brothers. It will be fun watching this future Duck play his final basketball season for the Panthers. Let's hope he will be able to play at least one season in the new basketball arena Oregon is set to start construction of this November. It will replace venerable McArthur Court. Go Panthers... Go Ducks!

Dow up over 400 at close !

Good News!"The relative calm in Friday's session, when the Dow fell 127, and Monday's trading, had more investors feeling confident that the worst of the market's volatility was behind it."

Polls

Obama got a small uptick in the polls over the weekend probably related to the Powell endorsement. Let's see what they look like tomorrow.

For perspective here are the polls from 4 years ago on October 23, 2004:

Gallup: Bush 51, Kerry 46
Democracy Corps: Bush 47, Kerry 49
Zogby: Bush 45, Kerry 47
Survey USA: Bush 48, Kerry 50
ARG: Bush 47, Kerry 50
Rasmussen: Bush 50, Kerry 46

Movie:"The Duchess" *****

This afternoon my wife and I went to see a historical movie about Georgiana Duchess of Dovenshire at Tinseltown here in Medford. It was between this movie and "Appaloosa" a new western that George Will writes is very good. Well, I lost and we went to see "The Duchess." This is a very good movie. I was a little worried when we got to Tinseltown as there were very few men in the audience. However. as an Anglophile I am a sucker for movies about English History. There was even some politics in the movie because the Duchess had an affair with a future English Prime Minister Earl Gray.... the guy the tea is name after. The scenery, costumes, music and acting are all very well done and I thoroughly enjoyed it and highly recommend it. Don't worry I will see "Appaloosa"!

Trade: Powell for Lieberman ?

John McCain takes a Senator and Democratic Vice Presidential Nominee in trade for for a former Secretary of State. I will take that deal any day of the week!I have never been a big fan of Colin Powell ever since I read Bob Woodward's book "The Commanders" about the First Gulf War in 1991 when the United States pushed Saddam Hussein out of Kuwait after he had invaded and raped that country. If Colin Powell's advise had been taken Saddam would still be in Kuwait! Powell as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff advocated a "Containment" strategy that would have left Saddam in Kuwait. Instead the first President Bush, George H Bush, disregarded his advise and launched Desert Storm and liberated Kuwait in a four day ground war! Powell has always been something of a Hamlet type figure.

McCain Gains in Polls

John McCain continues to gain in the polls in the running Wickre average of tracking polls. Today, Saturday Oct 18, the average is now Obama +3.75 a drop of half a point from yesterday. The average of polls was about +6 after the stock market began to crash. However, last Thursday and Friday Obama's lead had shrunk to +4.25. With polls taken through Friday night ( A night when a lot of Republicans are at high school football games) Obama's lead shrunk to +3.75. I would expect the individual state polls would start to follow. There is a new poll out of Florida with McCain +2. The Polls used are as follows:

Zogby +4 for Obama
Rasmussen +5 for Obama
Gallop (traditional) +2 Obama
Gallop (expanded) +4 Obama

Who's Playing the Race Card?.... By Charles Krauthammer

From Charles Krauthammer's column in the Washington Post:

What makes the charges against McCain especially revolting is that he has been scrupulous in eschewing the race card. He has gone far beyond what is right and necessary, refusing even to make an issue of Obama's deep, self-declared connection with the race-baiting Rev. Wright.

In the name of racial rectitude, McCain has denied himself the use of that perfectly legitimate issue. It is simply Orwellian for him to be now so widely vilified as a stoker of racism. What makes it doubly Orwellian is that these charges are being made on behalf of the one presidential candidate who has repeatedly, and indeed quite brilliantly, deployed the race card.

How brilliantly? The reason Bill Clinton is sulking in his tent is because he feels that Obama surrogates succeeded in painting him as a racist. Clinton has many sins, but from his student days to his post-presidency, his commitment and sincerity in advancing the cause of African Americans have been undeniable. If the man Toni Morrison called the first black president can be turned into a closet racist, then anyone can.

And Obama has shown no hesitation in doing so to McCain. Weeks ago, in Springfield, Mo., and elsewhere, he warned darkly that George Bush and John McCain were going to try to frighten you by saying that, among other scary things, Obama has "a funny name" and "doesn't look like all those other presidents on those dollar bills."

McCain has never said that, nor anything like that. When asked at the time to produce one instance of McCain deploying race, the Obama campaign could not. Yet here was Obama firing a preemptive charge of racism against a man who had not indulged in it. An extraordinary rhetorical feat, and a dishonorable one.

What makes this all the more dismaying is that it comes from Barack Obama, who has consistently presented himself as a healer, a man of a new generation above and beyond race, the man who would turn the page on the guilt-tripping grievance politics of Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton.

I once believed him.

NOW THIS FROM MISSOURI:

Mary Kay Green, a Barak Obama supporter and a "semi-retired civil rights attorney" has file a lawsuit in U.S District Court in Kansas City this week accusing McCain, his running mate Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin and their campaign manager Rick Davis of “intentionally, recklessly and irresponsibly” portraying Obama “as un-American, a terrorist by association, and ‘not like us,’ a non-white individual.”

Good grief, what will it be like if Obama is elected! Michael Barone's column (see post below) is right it will be a "Thugocracy!"

NOW THIS FROM FLORIDA:

A 12 year old middle school girl was called a racist for wearing a McCain/Pailin tee shirt to school.

We are all "Joe the Plumber"

Who will they go after next?

Where Do We Get Such Men!

The following is a blog entry written on Aug. 30, 2008, by Army Specialist Stephen Fortunato, who was killed Tuesday in Afghanistan when the vehicle he was riding in was blown up by an improvised explosive device. This entry was forwarded to the Globe by his mother, Elizabeth “Betty” Crawford.
If I may …
I’d like to say something….Just to get it out there so it is clear.
To all the pampered and protected Americans who feel it is their duty to inform me that I am not fighting for their freedom, and that i am a pawn in Bush’s agenda of greed and oil acquisition: Noted, and [expletive deleted] You.

I am not a robot. i am not blind or ignorant to the state of the world or the implications of the “war on terrorism.” i know that our leaders have made mistakes in the handling of a very sensitive situation, but do not for one second think that you can make me lose faith in what we, meaning America’s sons, daughters, fathers, and mothers in uniform are doing.
I am doing my part in fighting a very real enemy of the United States, i.e. Taliban, Al Qaida, and various other radical sects of Islam that have declared war on our way of life. Unless you believe the events of 9/11 were the result of a government conspiracy, which by the way would make you a MORON, there is no reasonable argument you can make against there being a true and dangerous threat that needs to be dealt with. i don’t care if there are corporations leaching off the war effort to make money, and i don’t care if you don’t think our freedom within America’s borders is actually at stake. i just want to kill those who would harm my family and friends. it is that simple. Even if this is just a war for profit or to assert America’s power, so what? Someone has to be on top and I want it to be us. There’s nothing wrong with wishing prosperity for your side.

I am a proud American. i believe that my country allows me to live my life more or less however i want to, and believe me, i have seen what the alternative of that looks like. i also believe that our big scary government does way more than it has to to help complete [expletive deleted]-ups get back on their feet, a stark comparison to places where leaders just line their own pockets with gold while allowing the people who gave them their power and privilage to starve. I have chosen my corner. I back my country, and am proud to defend it against aggressors. Also, if you dare accuse us of being inhumane, or overly aggressive because we have rolled into someone else’s country and blown some [expletive deleted] up and shot some people, let me remind you of just how inhumane we COULD be in defending ourselves. Let me remind you that we have a warhead that drops multiple bomblets from the stratosphere which upon impact, would turn all the sand in Iraq to glass, and reduce every living thing there to dust. Do we use it? No. Instead we use the most humane weapon ever devised: the American soldier. We send our bravest (and perhaps admitably craziest) men and women into enemy territory, into harms way, to root out those whom we are after and do our best to leave innocent lives unscathed.

…One last thing…a proposal. i know it has been stated time and time again but i just think it is worthy of reiteration. If you find yourself completely disgusted with the way America is being ran, and how we handle things on the global stage, you can leave. Isn’t that amazing? No one will stop you! If you are an anarchist, there are places you can go where there is no government to tell you anything. That’s right…you are left solely to your own devices and you can handle the men who show up at your door with AKs in any way that you see fit. Just don’t try good old American debate tactics on them because you will most likely end up bound and blind-folded, to have your head chopped off on the internet so your parents can see it. However if you insist on staying here and taking advantage of privilages such as free speach and WIC, keep the counter-productive [expletive deleted] to a minimum while the grown ups figure out how to handle this god-awful mess in the middle east.

Poll Averages: Obama +4.25

For fun I will be running a poll average until the election similar to the average on Real Clear Politics. Unlike Real Clear Politics I will only use the daily tracking polls that are up to date through the night before and are voters "likely" to vote with samples of over 1000. I reserve the right to throw out "crap" polls Today the results are unchanged from yesterday. It appears the debate on Wednesday night had little effect on the polls. In fact Rasmussen, Zogby Gallop Traditional and Expanded are unchanged.

Attacks on 'Joe the Plumber."

The media and the Obama campaign will attack and attempt to destroy any one who stands in the way of Obama's election as President. The latest victim is "Joe the Plumber". However, there will be a backlash! See this email that was posted on National Review online:

don't know why I'm e-mailing you, except that I just need to vent to someone on The Corner. Pass this around to the others if you like — I bet I'm not the only one.

I really don't like McCain. I'll probably vote for him just as a vote for divided government. I'm far too libertarian in my leanings to be comfortable with McCain (or Obama, for that matter).

That said, the way the pro-Obama media and bloggers, and Obama himself, have responded to Joe has got me nearly shaking with rage. They are attempting to destroy a man — a private citizen — who had the audacity to ask The One a question. Mind you, Joe was on his front lawn playing football with his son when Obama strolled up to give him his hopenchange spiel. Obama approached Joe, not the other way around. And Joe asked Obama an honest question. And Obama gave him an honest — and very, very revealing — answer. Again, mind you, the embarassment was on Obama's end, not Joe's. It wasn't a gotcha question.

And yet, for that Joe is being pilloried, every aspect of his private and professional life being sorted through and exposed. To prove ... what? What does that have to do with Obama's answer? What does Joe's situation have to do with Obama's philosophical answer — that he wants to "spread the wealth"? Obama's answer goes down the memory hole while the nation concentrates its fire on obliterating Joe the Plumber.

It's sickening, it's maddening and it's downright chilling.
Sorry for the length. But I am just SEETHING.

Oregon Basketball Games Southern Oregon Duck Fans will NOT get on TV

So far this football season Southern Oregon Duck Fans have missed two football games on TV as well as the coaches shows and replays of the games. This is because of the hard ball negations going on between the cable TV companies such as Charter here in Medford and Comcast Sports Northwest Cable Channel which is showing the games and coaches shows. Most Southern Oregon Duck fans have NOT had TV access to the Utah State and Boise State football games. Things are only going to get worse this winter for basketball. In the winter it is hard for Southern Oregon Duck fans to travel to Eugene for basketball games particularly those on weekday nights. Here is a list of games, home and away, you will miss unless you want to sit in a bar in Ashland!

The Coming Obama Thugocracy by Michael Barone

I need you to go out and talk to your friends and talk to your neighbors," Barack Obama told a crowd in Elko, Nev. "I want you to talk to them whether they are independent or whether they are Republican. I want you to argue with them and get in their face." Actually, Obama supporters are doing a lot more than getting into people's faces. They seem determined to shut people up.
Click on the title for the rest of Barone's column.

In summary U.S. News and World Report's Michael Barone gave examples of:

1.Obama supporters jamming a radio talk show telephones in Chicago that had a conservative author on talking about Obama's links to Bill Ayers and threats against the talk show host.

2.Distract Attorneys in Missouri threatening criminal prosecutions against those who made "false" statements about Barak Obama

3. Moves by Nancy Palose and other Democrats in Congress to shut down conservative radio talk shows by enacting the "Fairness Doctrine".

4. Liberals implementing "speech codes" on college campuses and universities.

5. Unions pushing for legislation that will end the secret ballot in workers deciding whether they should be represented by a union.

Now this update from the Weekly Standard blog:

Last week, Michael Barone wrote a column about Obama supporter's various attempts to silence critics titled "The Coming Obama Thugocracy." Sunday's Washington Post carried another example to be added to the list.

Last week a hotel in Prince George's County posted a McCain message on its maquee, reading: "Country first. McCain-Palin." There was an outcry from local citizens who threatened to boycott the hotel unless the owner took the sign down.

That's not particularly noteworthy--direct action and talking with your wallet is how these things are supposed to work. What is exceptional, however, is the language used by some of the people who were upset that the hotel's owner would dare support McCain or double-dare advertise said support. A sample of the hysteria:

"Businesspeople have to be mindful of the sentiments and sensibilities of their market trading area, and Prince George's County is overwhelmingly for Obama," said community activist Arthur Turner of Kettering, who was among those advocating a boycott. "People I have talked to look at the sign as a slap in the face. They feel it was blatant disrespect."

And:

The marquee supporting the GOP ticket in "an area that is strongly African American was like putting a stink bomb in the middle of the living room," said University of Maryland political Professor Ron Walters.

That's right, supporting John McCain is blatantly disrespectful, like a stink bomb in someone's living room. Imagine how unbearable it would be for people to actually criticize a President Obama.

UPDATE 2

Now there going after "Joe the Plumber" and all he did was ask Barack Obama a question! They and their allies in the press will do anything to destroy those who appose them.

Dow Closes over + 400 Today

Good News!!

The Polls Are Narrowing !!

Obama's lead in the national polls is narrowing. Last week as the stock market sunk lower and lower Obama's lead in the polls expanded to about 8 to 9 points according to the Real Clear Politics average.(Click on title for a link) The individual state polls soon followed the national averages and the political pundits started to count John McCain out. In the last few days that surge for Obama has stopped and the gap has narrowed to about a 4 point lead for Obama. I believe that the narrowing of the Obama lead is the result of the shock of the stock market drop beginning to level off in peoples minds. I believe last week there was a panic in the stock market AND in the minds of the voters. In looking at the polls I only count the polls that run through yesterday (Wednesday October 16) and have a sample of at least 1000 leaning voters. Be careful when looking at the Real Clear Politics average as there are a lot of old polls and what I call "crap" polls listed. (ie polls with small samples with strange weightings of Republicans and Democrats... CBS,New York Times, Newsweek and LA Times come to mind.... do you see a pattern?) The polls as of today look as follows:
Rasmussen Tracking Obama +4
Reuters/Zogby Tracking Obama +5
Gallup Tracking Traditional Obama +2
Gallup Tracking Expanded Obama +6

The average of these 4 polls through yesterday gives Obama a 4.25% lead. This gives John McCain a fighting chance of overcoming it as it sinks in that Barak Obama could actually end up as President. It's one thing to say you want Obama as a protest to what is happened in America and it's something else when he actually may be President for 4 years with a Democrat Congress! If this narrowing of national polls holds up I expect the state polls to also start narrowing in the next few day. It's not over till it's over. Ask Presidents Gore, Kerry and Dewey!

Thou shall not steal .......Ohio

Close to one in every three newly registered Ohio voters will end up on court-ordered lists being sent to county election boards because they have some discrepancy in their records, an elections spokesman said Wednesday. (click on the title for a link to the news story)

UPDATE The FBI is now investigating Obama's ally "Acorn" for new voter registration fraud!!
**************************

"Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely".

Historian, Lord Acton

Imagine the power Obama will have if he is elected President with a Democrat Congress, a filibuster proof majority in the Senate, an ageing Supreme Court and control over every U.S. Attorney and the FBI.

UPDATE 2

Boehner Releases Analysis Showing ACORN Has Received at Least $31 Million in Federal Funding; Untold Millions More through State & Local Agencies “Taxpayers Don’t Need ACORN Either,” Boehner Says in Response to Obama

Washington, Oct 16 - House Republican Leader John Boehner (R-OH) today released an analysis showing that the left-wing group ACORN, currently under investigation by the FBI for a “coordinated national scam” of voter registration fraud according to the Associated Press, has received at least $31 million in federal funding from various federal agencies since 1998. This total does not count the untold millions more that ACORN has received indirectly through state and local agencies that receive federal block grants. Boehner, who last week called for an end to federal funding of ACORN following widespread reports of voter fraud by the group, released the following statement:

“Senator Obama recently said that he doesn’t need ACORN. Well, American taxpayers don’t need ACORN either. They don’t need ACORN’s voter registration fraud, and they no longer need to support ACORN with federal funds.

“ACORN’s free ride on the backs of taxpayers must end immediately. An initial review of federal records shows ACORN affiliates have received at least $31 million in direct federal funding from American taxpayers over the past 10 years, and millions more indirectly through state and local agencies that receive federal block grants. House Republicans worked together to stop the Majority from using taxpayer dollars to fill a slush fund created just for ACORN, but now we must go further to turn off the spigot of federal grants on which ACORN depends.

“Recent revelations of voter registration fraud on a massive scale in critical states are unacceptable. ACORN’s dishonest approach to voter registration, including fraudulently registering the cartoon character Mickey Mouse, shows a brazen disrespect for the law and our system of free and fair elections. In conjunction with Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac and its political allies in the Democratic Party, ACORN also played a key role in creating the financial crisis that ultimately put our entire economy in peril. It’s time for us to stop forcing American taxpayers to fund the ACORN machine.”

A review of the Federal Register shows that ACORN affiliates in 11 states received more than $31 million in federal funds from 1998 to 2008.

One of the grants to an ACORN affiliate, a Jan. 17, 2007 award to ACORN Associates Inc. of Albuquerque, NM, is notable because it appears to facilitate and encourage the use of risky subprime loans, now viewed by many as a contributing factor in the recent freezing up of international credit markets. The title for the grant? “Education and Outreach Initiative/Subprime Lending Component.”
